JB Moundele

JB Moundele es un saxofonista francés imbuido de africanidad. Procedente de la escena del jazz, ha colaborado con grandes figuras de ese continente tan musical. En este autoproducido “Racines” (‘Raíces’) nos ofrece un hermoso y delicado diálogo musical con la kora de Mbady Diabate y las percusiones de Bruno Desbiolles.

JB Moundele is a French saxophonist deeply influenced by African culture. Coming from the jazz scene, he has collaborated with some of the greatest figures from that richly musical continent. In this self-produced album “Racines” (“Roots”), he offers us a beautiful and delicate musical dialogue with the kora of Mbady Diabate and the percussion of Bruno Desbiolles.

Disfrutamos de sabrosos sones cumbiancheros incluidos en esta retrospectiva titulada “Güepa je!”, que vuelve la mirada hacia las celebradas composiciones e interpretaciones de uno de los más venerados representantes de la música colombiana popular del siglo pasado: Edmundo Arias. Es una reciente edición del sello belga Radio Martiko.

We enjoy the flavorful cumbia rhythms included in this retrospective titled “Güepa je!”, which looks back at the celebrated compositions and performances of one of the most revered representatives of Colombian popular music of the last century: Edmundo Arias. It is a recent release by the Belgian label Radio Martiko.

We celebrate the first annual edition of the LIMúR, the Iberian Roots Music Chart, featuring the finest of the Iberian-rooted music from 2024, congratulating the group Vigüela for securing the first place. We had previously opened with Chilean and Colombian new releases, including a reissue of the great Violeta Parra.

El guitarrista flamenco español Melón Jiménez y la flautista canadiense de raíces chinojaponesas Lara Wong aúnan fuerzas en un disco titulado “Confluencias”, editado por Scatscat Music, en el que, partiendo de los palos flamencos, dialogan con otras músicas del planeta, como, en el caso de las piezas que escuchamos, la brasileña y la india.

The Spanish flamenco guitarist Melón Jiménez and the Canadian flutist of Chinese-Japanese heritage Lara Wong join forces on an album titled “Confluencias,” released by Scatscat Music. Drawing from flamenco styles, they engage in a dialogue with other music traditions from around the world, such as Brazilian and Indian music, as showcased in the pieces we hear.

Comenzamos con los primeros favoritos del año: los favoritos de Mundofonías de enero del 2025, que corresponden a los nuevos trabajos del saxofonista francés, imbuido de africanidad, JB Moundele, al dúo flamenco-global de Melón Jiménez y Lara Wong y al canadiense luisianizado Benoît LeBlanc. Nos embarcamos después en una caravana que nos lleva desde Mali hasta Persia, con la nueva música de Salif Keita, los sones gnawa de Asmaa Hamzaoui, presente en la programación de LIMO, en Madrid, que también comentamos; más sonido gnawa en diálogo con otras expresividades musicales, y otras nuevas o rescatadas propuestas orientalizantes.

We begin with the first favorites of the year: the Mundofonías favorites for January 2025, which feature the new albums of the French saxophonist imbued with African influences, JB Moundele, the flamenco-global duo Melón Jiménez and Lara Wong, and the Canadian with a Louisianan aproach, Benoît LeBlanc. We then embark on a caravan that takes us from Mali to Persia, featuring the new music of Salif Keita, the gnawa sounds of Asmaa Hamzaoui, who is part of the programming at LIMO in Madrid, which we also discuss; more gnawa sounds in dialogue with other musical expressions, as well as other new or rediscovered orientalizing proposals.

These two Chinese artists intertwine the strings of their instruments in a delicate album titled “Prelude to the Divine Realm,” which will soon be released by Naxos World. They are Gao Hong, a pipa lute player, and Zhao Xiaoxia, a guqin zither player.

Sones que nos llegan desde Inglaterra, Escocia, Irlanda, Bretaña y otros parajes de Francia, en la parte europea, y, del otro lado del océano, desde Canadá y la costa este de Estados Unidos.

The sea, air, and musical streams of the North Atlantic carry us from one shore to another, from one continent to another, with recently released albums. Sounds arriving from England, Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, and other parts of France on the European side, and, across the ocean, from Canada and the East Coast of the United States.
