A monsoon of music

Viajamos por el subcontinente indio, explorando algunas de las más interesantes publicaciones discográficas publicadas recientemente o que saldrán a la luz próximamente. Disfrutamos con grabaciones de sellos independientes pakistaníes que nos descubren maravillosas voces. Escuchamos también a grandes figuras de qawwali que regresan, así como a artistas femeninas que reivindican su presencia en ese espacio. También a míticos y veteranos músicos indios embarcados en mil aventuras y a otros que van desplegando desafiantes carreras, en simbiosis musical con otros estilos y artistas de diferentes procedencias.

We travel across the Indian subcontinent, exploring some of the most interesting recent or upcoming album releases. We enjoy recordings from independent Pakistani labels that unveil marvelous voices. We also listen to great qawwali masters making a comeback, as well as female artists asserting their presence in this space. Additionally, we hear legendary and veteran Indian musicians who have embarked on countless adventures, as well as others who are forging bold careers in musical symbiosis with different styles and artists from diverse backgrounds.

Maouzoun

Maouzoun (‘equilibrado, medido, bien acompasado’ en árabe) es el dúo formado por el laudista sirio, tañedor de ud, Shble Saleem, y la violinista noruega Inger Hannisdal, quien fluye entre diversos lenguajes musicales, como los propios de su tierra, la música árabe o el jazz. Recreando el espíritu de las músicas que bullían en El Cairo de la primera mitad del siglo XX, especiadas con pinceladas nórdicas, nos presentan su proyecto con este disco.

Maouzoun (‘balanced, metered, with rhythm’ in Arabic) is the duo formed by the Syrian oud player Shble Saleem and the Norwegian violinist Inger Hannisdal, who flows between various musical languages, including those of her homeland, Arabic music, or jazz. Recreating the spirit of the sounds that thrived in Cairo during the first half of the 20th century, spiced with Nordic touches, they present their project with this album.

Repaso libre a la Transglobal World Music Chart de este mes, confeccionada a través de la votación de un panel de divulgadores de las músicas del mundo de todos los continentes, del que los hacedores de Mundofonías somos cocreadores y coimpulsores. Terminamos en Mali, con el número 1, que es el nuevo disco de Samba Touré.

Damily

Con motivo de la muerte de su madre, Damily viaja a la tierra de sus raíces, Toliara, en el sur de Madagascar, para participar en la “fihisa” en su honor, la gran fiesta fúnebre con la que los malgaches contrastan el dolor de la pérdida con una exuberante y alegre celebración en honor de los ancestros a ritmo de “tsapiky”. Recogiendo la música que allí brotaba, en formato acústico o con las más improvisadas amplificaciones, este disco autoproducido captura alguno de aquellos momentos únicos.

Following the death of his mother, Damily travels to his ancestral land, Toliara, in the south of Madagascar, to take part in the “fihisa” held in her honor, the grand funeral celebration with which the Malagasy contrast the sorrow of loss with an exuberant and joyful tribute to their ancestors, set to the rhythm of “tsapiky”. Capturing the music that emerged there, whether in an acoustic format or through the most improvised amplifications, this self-produced album preserves some of those unique moments.

WoWaKin

WoWaKin toma su nombre de las primeras letras de los apellidos de sus tres componentes, quienes nos llevan a través de las diversas tradiciones y regiones de Polonia (con una pequeña escapada a Ucrania) con elegancia y buen hacer, como nos tienen acostumbrados. Su último trabajo, el que nos acompaña, se titula “Latem” (‘Verano’).

WoWaKin takes its name from the first letters of the surnames of its three members, who guide us through the diverse traditions and regions of Poland (with a brief excursion to Ukraine) with elegance and mastery, as they have accustomed us to. Their latest work, the one accompanying us now, is titled “Latem” (‘Summer’).
