We open with some typical Dominican merengues, and then travel through Iberian, Belgian and Italian music, visiting, among other places, Catalonia, Mallorca, Salamanca, Apulia, Sicily or Salento. We announce the next concert of Fetén Fetén in Madrid, which will bring together many musical friends, and we greet the listeners and makers of Radioactiva Tx in Tequisquiapan, Querétaro, Mexico, a radio station in which we start to be broadcasted this week.

Inmersión klezmer
Klezmer immersion

Nos sumergimos en el arte del klezmer, esa expresión musical surgida en las comunidades judías askenazíes de Europa central y oriental, y que viajó por todo el mundo, desarrollando inesperadas conexiones. Comenzamos con dos clarinetistas míticos del Nueva York de principios del siglo XX: Dave Tarras y Naftule Brandwein 📸. Este último es el hilo conductor de buena parte de lo que viene a continuación, con diferentes grupos y artistas que han evocado expresamente su arte y hasta le han colocado en realidades paralelas. Escuchamos a Di Naye Kapelye con «Naftule’s doina», o a la Shirim Klezmer Orchestra, con «Naftule’s dream», pieza que sirvió para dar nombre a una nueva formación integrada por algunos de sus componentes. De esos Naftule’s Dream escuchamos «Black wedding» y una muy peculiar versión de la «Gnosienne n.º 3» de Erik Satie. Continuamos con The Klezmatics y su «Naftule-tsikl», para seguir con el clarinetista David Krakauer y su grupo Klezmer Madness, evocando lo que habría sido un encuentro entre dos grandes del clarinete, Naftule Brandwein y Sidney Bechet, en su «Klezmer à la Bechet». Dejamos la estela naftuliana para explorar una curiosa y alocada experiencia japonesa, la de Cicala Mvta, aunando el estilo callejero llamado chindon con el klezmer y otras influencias. Cerramos nuevamente con la Shirim Klezmer Orchestra.

We dive into the art of klezmer, that musical expression that emerged in the Ashkenazi Jewish communities of Central and Eastern Europe, and that traveled around the world, developing unexpected connections. We begin with two legendary clarinetists of early 20th century New York: Dave Tarras and Naftule Brandwein 📸. The latter is the common thread of much of what follows, with different groups and artists expressly evoking his art and even placing him in parallel realities. We hear Di Naye Kapelye with «Naftule’s Doina», or the Shirim Klezmer Orchestra, with «Naftule’s Dream», a piece that served to give name to a new band integrated by some of its components. From Naftule’s Dream we listen to «Black Wedding» and a very peculiar version of Erik Satie‘s «Gnosienne No. 3». We continue with The Klezmatics and their «Naftule-Tsikl», to follow with the clarinetist David Krakauer and his group Klezmer Madness, evoking what would have been a meeting between two clarinet greats, Naftule Brandwein and Sidney Bechet, in his «Klezmer à la Bechet«. We leave the naftulian trail to explore an intriging and crazy Japanese experience, that of Cicala Mvta, bringing together the street style called chindon with klezmer and other influences. We close again with the Shirim Klezmer Orchestra.

Mundofonías is like the world and its people: plural, diverse, cordial. We wish the real world were more and more like that. We explore music with Valencian, Occitan, Hungarian, Somaliland, Surinam, Reunion, Brazilian, Jewish, Palestinian and Kurdish roots, with a special tribute to one of the founders of the essential Valencian group Al Tall: Manolo Miralles.

From the Danube to the Aegean

Seguimos el curso del segundo río más largo de Europa, el Danubio, deteniéndonos a escuchar músicas, a través de nuevas grabaciones, que nos llegan de algunos de sus países ribereños y cercanos. Nos vamos incluso más allá de su desembocadura, cruzando el mar Negro, para alcanzar Anatolia y el Cáucaso, y buscando también en el Egeo las costas helénicas. Disfrutamos con las conexiones húngaras, búlgaras y georgianas de Lakvar; de las muy diferentes propuestas que desde Eslovaquia nos traen Nogaband 📸, Sisa Michalidesová y Martín Geišberg; de las músicas de Zvezdana Novaković (Eslovenia), Adam Semijalac (Croacia) o Vanja Ilijev (Serbia); del virtuoso búlgaro instalado en Viena Martin Lubenov, con su Orkestar; del buen hacer del artista kurdo Doğan Çelik, o de los atractivos grupos griegos Amoroza y Gidiki.

We follow the course of the second longest river in Europe, the Danube, pausing to listen to music, through new recordings, that come to us from some of its riparian and nearby countries. We even go beyond its mouth, crossing the Black Sea, to reach Anatolia and the Caucasus, and also looking for the Hellenic coasts in the Aegean. We enjoy the Hungarian, Bulgarian and Georgian connections of Lakvar; the very different proposals that Nogaband 📸, Sisa Michalidesová and Martin Geišberg bring us from Slovakia; the music of Zvezdana Novaković (Slovenia), Adam Semijalac (Croatia) or Vanja Ilijev (Serbia); the Bulgarian virtuoso Martin Lubenov, settled in Vienna, with his Orkestar; the good work of the Kurdish artist Doğan Çelik, or the attractive Greek groups Amoroza and Gidiki.
