Durante los últimos días, los hacedores de Mundofonías nos hemos sumergido en la escucha de un buen número de discos de raíces italianas, candidatos al Premio Loano per la Musica Tradizionale Italiana, del que ambos somos miembros del jurado. Algunos ya habían sonado en el programa y otros los descubrimos y disfrutamos ahora por primera vez, llevándonos por numerosos y variados recodos del país. Os acercamos una selección de lo más interesante, a la espera de conocer a quién va a parar el galardón. Aprovechamos la inesperada conexión canaria y atlántica que nos ofrece Simona Di Gregorio para rematar con la nueva música del cubano Paquito D’Rivera, anunciando su directo en Madrid.

Over the past few days, the makers of Mundofonías have immersed ourselves in listening to a good number of albums with Italian roots, candidates for the Premio Loano per la Musica Tradizionale Italiana, of which we are both jury members. Some had already been featured on our show and others we are discovering and enjoying now for the first time, taking us through many and varied corners of the country. We bring you a selection of the most interesting, while we await the announcement of the award winner. Taking advantage of an unexpected Canarian and Atlantic connection offered by Simona Di Gregorio, we round off with new music from the Cuban Paquito D’Rivera, announcing his live performance in Madrid.

El percusionista cubano, afincado en Francia, Mansfarroll nos brinda su nuevo trabajo, “África sí”, en el que convergen artistas y aromas de mil procedencias y sonoridades: cubanas y francesas, claro, pero también de otros muchos lugares de Europa, África y América.

Cuban percussionist Mansfarroll, based in France, offers us his new work, “África sí”, in which artists and flavours from a thousand origins and sounds converge: Cuban and French, of course, but also from many other places across Europe, Africa and America.

Navegamos por los mares interiores que conectan Europa, África y Asia, en los que la corriente lleva y trae músicas que viajan y se encuentran también entre ellas. La travesía parte desde Cataluña, pasa después por Francia, con aromas búlgaros ya flotando en el aire, recala a continuación en Grecia y Anatolia, para llevarnos posteriormente tanto a las comunidades rurales gagaúzas de Moldavia como a la corte otomana, adonde también acudían compositores europeos en siglos pasados. Continuamos con ecos armenios y, finalmente, nos adentramos en el continente euroasiático hasta el corazón de Siberia.

We sail through the inland seas connecting Europe, Africa and Asia, where the current carries music back and forth, music that travels and also encounters itself along the way. The voyage sets out from Catalonia, then passes through France, with Bulgarian aromas already floating in the air, before calling in at Greece and Anatolia, taking us subsequently to both the rural Gagauz communities of Moldova and the Ottoman court, which European composers also visited in past centuries. We continue with Armenian echoes and, finally, venture into the Eurasian continent as far as the heart of Siberia.

A planet in resonance

Resuenan las músicas del planeta en esta edición de Mundofonías. Abrimos en África, con ecos del Congo, Ghana y Sudáfrica, con conexiones belgas y francesas, y rescatando alguna joya del pasado. Seguimos por Europa, entre Inglaterra, Noruega, Bretaña, con entrelazamientos que cruzan todo el continente, desde el sur de Italia al país sami y desde la península ibérica a los Balcanes. El cierre tiene aires brasileños.

The music of the planet resonates in this edition of Mundofonías. We open in Africa, with echoes from the Congo, Ghana and South Africa, with Belgian and French connections, and bringing back some gems from the past. We continue through Europe, between England, Norway, Brittany, with interweavings that cross the whole continent, from southern Italy to the Sami lands and from the Iberian Peninsula to the Balkans. The closing has Brazilian flavours.

Esta artista radicada en Nueva York, Kaethe Hostetter, se nos presenta en solitario con el nombre artístico de K8A para desgranar su expresividad a base de violín y efectos, hondamente inspirada en las sonoridades etíopes. Es su disco de debut “Woradj alle”, algo así como ‘Aquí me bajo’.

This New York-based artist, Kaethe Hostetter, presents herself as a solo act under the stage name K8A, unfolding her expressiveness through violin and effects, deeply inspired by Ethiopian sounds. Her debut album is «Woradj alle«, meaning something like ‘Let me off right around here’.

Un séptimo álbum para celebrar 25 años de andadura y un cambio significativo en su nombre: de llamarse Tram des Balkans (‘Tranvía de los Balcanes’), los componentes de este quinteto francés prefieren ahora ser simplemente conocidos simplemente como Tram, acortando el nombre para ampliar perspectivas e influencias. Este “Alligator”, tan fresco como variado y divertido, nos demuestra que la decisión ha sido acertada.

A seventh album to celebrate 25 years together and a significant change in their name: from being called Tram des Balkans (‘tramway of the Balkans’), the members of this French quintet now prefer to be known simply as Tram, shortening the name to broaden perspectives and influences. This “Alligator”, as fresh as it is varied and playful, shows that the decision has been the right one.

Por el oriente atlántico
On the eastern Atlantic shores

Recorremos las riberas del oriente atlántico y sus mares adyacentes, que se corresponde con el occidente del Viejo Mundo, en el cual no solemos pensar en esta clave oriental. Suenan músicas de reciente aparición que nos hacen viajar por África y Europa a través de diversos parajes, climas y estilos. Pasamos por Noruega, Inglaterra, Irlanda, Dinamarca, Bélgica, Bretaña, un París con conexión zulú, Occitania en clave magrebí, Guinea y Senegal, encontrando allí un nuevo enlace que cierra el círculo y nos lleva de vuelta a Noruega.

We travel along the shores of the eastern Atlantic and its adjacent seas, which correspond to the west of the Old World, a region we do not usually think of in these eastern terms. We hear recently released music that takes us through Africa and Europe across diverse landscapes, climates and styles. We pass through Norway, England, Ireland, Denmark, Belgium, Brittany, a Paris with a Zulu connection, Occitania with a Maghrebi twist, Guinea and Senegal, where we find a new link that closes the circle and brings us back to Norway.

Comenzamos con los tres discos favoritos de Mundofonías de abril del 2016, con los franceses Tram, el senegalés Solo Cissokho y su disco póstumo, y la recopilación «Indian talking machine part two: instrumental gems from the 78rpm era«. Al hilo de este último recopilatorio, recuperamos algunas sorprendentes piezas de la primera entrega de la serie, para seguir con aires orientales que nos traen brisas musicales persas, árabes y otomanas, estas últimas, entreveradas con sonoridades barrocas, para terminar con una contundente entrega musical desde Hungría.

We begin with the three favorite albums of Mundofonías for April 2016, featuring the French band Tram, the Senegalese Solo Cissokho and his posthumous album, and the compilation «Indian Talking Machine Part Two: Instrumental Gems from the 78rpm Era«. Following this last compilation, we revisit some surprising pieces from the first installment of the series, before continuing with Eastern influences that bring us Persian, Arabic and Ottoman musical breezes, the latter interwoven with Baroque sonorities, to conclude with a powerful musical delivery from Hungary.

The Danish Trio Mio bring us this new album, “Dansant”, which, as its name suggests, is focused on dancing fun. Inspired by community gatherings of traditional music and dance, known there as “ball”, these artists present new and engaging compositions to be enjoyed in motion.
