Traemos numerosos estrenos y avances que nos brindan esencias flamencas, a veces entremezcladas con músicas de otros tiempos y con conexiones africanas y latinoamericanas; saltarina pizzica de Salento; folk soñador del norte de Europa; danzas francesas jazzificadas; arcos dibujando sorprendentes paisajes sonoros, y músicas árabes con fundamento. Nos visita Fahmi Alqhai, quien nos habla del espectáculo «Gugurumbé, las raíces negras», que se presentará próximamente en Madrid.

We bring numerous premieres and previews that bring us flamenco essences, sometimes blended with music from other times and with African and Latin American connections; jumping pizzica from Salento; dreamy folk from Northern Europe; jazzified French dances; bows drawing surprising soundscapes, and Arabic music with substance. We are accompanied by Fahmi Alqhai, who talks about the show «Gugurumbé, the black roots», which will be presented soon in Madrid.

Hablamos con Johanni Curtet, uno de los impulsores del colectivo Routes Nomades que, desde Francia, impulsa proyectos y promueve artistas en relación, sobre todo, con la cultura musical mongola. Escuchamos su propia música y la del grupo Meïkhâneh 📸, el el que él interviene, para seguir después nomadeando por Oriente con interesantes combinaciones recogidas en recientes publicaciones, como la del chino Guo Gan con la vietnamita Huong Thanh y la japonesa Fumie Hihara; el encuentro entre el laúd pipa chino de Gao Hong con la guitarra flamenca de Ignacio Lusardi Monteverde; la reunión italo-iraní de Frana Karimi Montanari; la combinación indo-camerística de Lucian Kano Balmer, desde California, y la música del palestino Ramzi Aburedwan, acompañada del deseo y la demanda de un inmediato alto el fuego y el cese del sufrimiento en su tierra. Terminamos con las combinaciones jazzísticas, camerísticas y norteafricanas del proyecto Koum Tara.

We talk to Johanni Curtet, one of the driving forces behind the Routes Nomades collective, which, from France, promotes projects and artists related, above all, to Mongolian musical culture. We listen to his own music and that of the group Meïkhâneh 📸, in which he participates, to then continue our nomadic journey through the East with interesting combinations collected in recent publications, such as that of the Chinese Guo Gan with the Vietnamese Huong Thanh and the Japanese Fumie Hihara; the encounter between the Chinese pipa lute of Gao Hong with the flamenco guitar of Ignacio Lusardi Monteverde; the Italian-Iranian meeting of Frana Karimi Montanari; the Indo-cameristic combination of Lucian Kano Balmer, from California, and the music of the Palestinian Ramzi Aburedwan, accompanied by the desire and the demand for an immediate ceasefire and the ending of the suffering in his land. We end with the jazz, chamber and North African combinations of the Koum Tara project.

From Cyprus to the heart of Africa

En esta edición, recordamos la que fue la décima edición del Cyprus Jazz & World Music Showcase con la música de dos de los artistas que presentaron su trabajo en el escenario del Teatro Rialto de Limasol: el trío de Odysseas Toumazou, Origins y el sexteto vocal Kalesma. En primicia mundial escuchamos la grabación del directo que esta banda realizó en el evento. Compartimos unas declaraciones de Vassilis Philippou, de Kalesma, y también de Quentin Pilet, impulsor del sello suizo Les Disques Bongo Joe. Completan estas Mundofonías músicas que nos llegan de Perú, Mali y los dos Congos.

In this edition, we remember the tenth edition of the Cyprus Jazz & World Music Showcase with the music of two artists who presented their work on the stage of the Rialto Theater in Limassol: the Odysseas Toumazou Origins trio and the Kalesma vocal sextet. In a world premiere, we listen to the live recording that this band performed at the event. We share the words of Vassilis Philippou of Kalesma, and also from Quentin Pilet, founder of the Swiss label Les Disques Bongo Joe. These Mundofonías are completed with music from Peru, Mali and the two Congos.

Babel Music XP & Don Kipper

Programa bitemático, en cuya primera parte repasamos la discografía de los plurilondinenses Don Kipper, con la voz invitada de Josh Middleton. La segunda parte la dedicamos al Babel Music XP, que tendrá lugar en Marsella a finales de marzo y al que asistirá el equipo de Mundofonías. Escuchamos algunas de las propuestas que se podrán escuchar allí en vivo, con inspiraciones griegas, tunecinas, anatolias y occitanas, mientras charlamos también con su director, Olivier Rey.

Bitematic program, in the first part of which we review the discography of the pluriLondoners Don Kipper, with the guest voice of Josh Middleton. The second part is dedicated to Babel Music XP, which will take place in Marseille at the end of March and will be attended by the Mundofonías team. We listen to some of the proposals that will be heard there live, with Greek, Tunisian, Anatolian and Occitan inspirations, while we also chat with its director, Olivier Rey.

Transglobal World Music Chart

Repaso libre a la Transglobal World Music Chart de este mes, confeccionada a través de la votación de un panel de divulgadores de las músicas del mundo de todos los continentes, del que los hacedores de Mundofonías somos cocreadores y coimpulsores. Este mes de febrero del 2024, resuenan músicas con aires italianos, portugueses, estonios, británicos, malienses, chinos y con evocaciones mongolas, flamencas, del Sahel o de Estambul. El número 1 es el artista tuareg Bombino.

A loose review of this month’s Transglobal World Music Chart, determined by a panel of world music specialists from all the continents, of which the Mundofonías‘ presenters are co-creators and co-promoters. This month of February 2024, we hear music with Italian, Portuguese, Estonian, British, Malian, Chinese, Malian, Mongolian, flamenco, Sahelian or Istanbul evocations. Number 1 is the Tuareg artist Bombino.

Bélgica y los Países Bajos son epicentros de creatividad musical donde se experimenta con músicas de muy diferente procedencia y donde se encuentran artistas de muy variado bagaje, dando lugar a expresiones sonoras de lo más interesante. Exploramos algunas de ellas a través de discos muy recientes, los cuales, desde esos territorios europeos, nos acercan también aromas de las más diversas partes del mundo: Etiopía, Venezuela, Marruecos, Siria… Abrimos con el Griff Trío y escuchamos a continuación a Didier Laloy por partida doble: primero en formato sinfónico y después con el dúo DYAD. Continuamos con Les Violons de Bruxelles 📸, Job Chajes Sextet, Schroothoop, Azmari, 3’Ain y Sheikhs Shikhats & B’net Chaabi.

Belgium and the Netherlands are epicenters of musical creativity where music of very different origins is experimented with and where artists of very varied backgrounds can be found, giving rise to the most interesting sonic expressions. We explore some of them through very recent albums, which, from these European territories, also bring us aromas from the most diverse parts of the world: Ethiopia, Venezuela, Morocco, Syria… We open with the Griff Trio and then listen to Didier Laloy twice: first in symphonic format and then with the duo DYAD. We continue with Les Violons de Bruxelles 📸, Job Chajes Sextet, Schroothoop, Azmari, 3’Ain and Sheikhs Shikhats & B’net Chaabi.

We open with some typical Dominican merengues, and then travel through Iberian, Belgian and Italian music, visiting, among other places, Catalonia, Mallorca, Salamanca, Apulia, Sicily or Salento. We announce the next concert of Fetén Fetén in Madrid, which will bring together many musical friends, and we greet the listeners and makers of Radioactiva Tx in Tequisquiapan, Querétaro, Mexico, a radio station in which we start to be broadcasted this week.
