Con motivo de la muerte de su madre, Damily viaja a la tierra de sus raíces, Toliara, en el sur de Madagascar, para participar en la “fihisa” en su honor, la gran fiesta fúnebre con la que los malgaches contrastan el dolor de la pérdida con una exuberante y alegre celebración en honor de los ancestros a ritmo de “tsapiky”. Recogiendo la música que allí brotaba, en formato acústico o con las más improvisadas amplificaciones, este disco autoproducido captura alguno de aquellos momentos únicos.

Following the death of his mother, Damily travels to his ancestral land, Toliara, in the south of Madagascar, to take part in the “fihisa” held in her honor, the grand funeral celebration with which the Malagasy contrast the sorrow of loss with an exuberant and joyful tribute to their ancestors, set to the rhythm of “tsapiky”. Capturing the music that emerged there, whether in an acoustic format or through the most improvised amplifications, this self-produced album preserves some of those unique moments.

WoWaKin

WoWaKin toma su nombre de las primeras letras de los apellidos de sus tres componentes, quienes nos llevan a través de las diversas tradiciones y regiones de Polonia (con una pequeña escapada a Ucrania) con elegancia y buen hacer, como nos tienen acostumbrados. Su último trabajo, el que nos acompaña, se titula “Latem” (‘Verano’).

WoWaKin takes its name from the first letters of the surnames of its three members, who guide us through the diverse traditions and regions of Poland (with a brief excursion to Ukraine) with elegance and mastery, as they have accustomed us to. Their latest work, the one accompanying us now, is titled “Latem” (‘Summer’).

Escuchamos la música contenida en el nuevo álbum de esta vocalista y compositora indonesia, Peni Candra Rini, procedente de la isla de Java, en cuyas tradiciones se inspira para las creaciones de su disco “Wani” (‘Audaz’), que hace honor a su título, en contraste con su anterior trabajo, “Wulansih”, editado pocos meses antes (ambos a través de New Amsterdam Records), mucho más calmado e introspectivo.

We listen to the music from the new album by this Indonesian vocalist and composer, Peni Candra Rini, from the island of Java, whose traditions inspire the creations in her album “Wani” (‘Bold’), which lives up to its title, in contrast with her previous work, “Wulansih”, released just a few months earlier (both through New Amsterdam Records), a much calmer and introspective piece.

ZRI

ZRI son las siglas de Zum Roten Igel (‘Al búho rojo’), nombre de un mítico local vienés de la época de Schubert y Brahms, donde compositores y melómanos se reunían para escuchar las nuevas composiciones, charlar y beber. Y también es el nombre de este proyecto, que le da a los clásicos una sabrosa pincelada de las músicas populares en las que se inspiraron, echando también la mirada a lo que se cocía en el imperio Otomano. Su disco “Café Danube” sale editado a través de ARC Music / Naxos World.

ZRI stands for Zum Roten Igel (‘To the Red Hedgehog’), the name of a legendary Viennese venue from the time of Schubert and Brahms, where composers and music lovers gathered to listen to new compositions, chat, and drink. It is also the name of this project, which gives the classics a flavorful touch of the folk music that inspired them, while also looking at what was happening in the Ottoman Empire. Their album “Café Danube” is released through ARC Music / Naxos World.

Viajamos décadas atrás en el espaciotiempo en busca de joyas del pasado que nos traen ecos sefardíes en Nueva York, tradiciones macedonias y de los gitanos de Eslovaquia. Volvemos al presente para escuchar otras músicas populares, desde grabaciones estríctamente tradicionales a otras reelaboraciones, que nos hacen viajar por Bielorrusia, Ucrania, Polonia, Serbia o los Urales, escuchando también músicas de valacos, boikos o baskires. Terminamos en el subcontinente indio, con ecos de Lahore y Jaipur.

We travel decades back in spacetime in search of gems from the past that bring us echoes of Sephardic sounds in New York, Macedonian traditions, and the Roma of Slovakia. We return to the present to listen to other popular music, from strictly traditional recordings to new reinterpretations, taking us on a journey through Belarus, Ukraine, Poland, Serbia, or the Urals, also hearing music from the Vlachs, Boykos, or Bashkirs. We finish in the Indian subcontinent, with echoes of Lahore and Jaipur.

Kaito Winse

Kaito Winse es un griot, un juglar de Burkina Faso trasladado a Bélgica, desde donde nos lanza su propuesta desnuda y en solitario: su voz que canta, recita y exhorta, acompañada de los instrumentos con los que él mismo se acompaña, como, en el caso de las piezas que escuchamos, el tambor parlante. Su disco “Reele bumbou” (‘Tener un buen apoyo’) ve la luz estos días gracias a la entente de los sellos belgas Rebel Up y Zephyrus Records.

Kaito Winse is a griot, a minstrel from Burkina Faso who relocated to Belgium, from where he presents his raw and solitary proposal: his voice singing, reciting, and exhorting, accompanied by the instruments he plays himself, such as, in the case of the pieces we hear, the talking drum. His album “Reele bumbou” (‘To have good support’) is being released these days thanks to the partnership of the Belgian labels Rebel Up and Zephyrus Records.
