Nos vamos al Zimbabue de los años inmediatamente anteriores a su independencia, entre 1975 y 1980. Su capital, Harare, era un hervidero de influencias musicales locales e importadas que fueron dando forma a un sonido característico y original, sin dejar de ser tremendamente plural, como se refleja en esta recopilación que acaba de publicar Analog Africa: “Roots rocking Zimbabwe: The modern sound of Harare townships, 1975-1980”.

We head to Zimbabwe in the years immediately preceding its independence, between 1975 and 1980. Its capital, Harare, was a hotbed of local and imported musical influences that shaped a distinctive and original sound, while remaining remarkably diverse, as reflected in this compilation just released by Analog Africa: “Roots rocking Zimbabwe: The modern sound of Harare townships, 1975-1980”.

Navegamos entre nuevas músicas y magníficas reediciones, entre piezas vocales e instrumentales, y entre danzas y sones recogidos. Viajamos con músicas de mil rostros entre Bretaña, Inglaterra, Dinamarca, Noruega, el Épiro, los Cárpatos, Persia y la música klezmer, con artistas también llegados desde tierras ibéricas, itálicas y canadienses.

We navigate between new music and magnificent reissues, between vocal and instrumental pieces, and between dances and reflective tunes. We travel with music of a thousand faces across Brittany, England, Denmark, Norway, Epirus, the Carpathians, Persia and klezmer music, with artists also arriving from Iberian, Italian and Canadian lands.

Warda

Nos visita una de las grandes divas de la música árabe del pasado siglo: Warda. Nacida en París, de ascendencia argelina y libanesa, su vida transcurrió también por Beirut, Argelia y El Cairo. El sello WeWantSounds remasteriza y reedita ahora esta grabación en directo, “We malo” (‘Y qué’), realizada hace justo 50 años.

We are visited by one of the great divas of Arabic music from the past century: Warda. Born in Paris, of Algerian and Lebanese descent, her life also unfolded in Beirut, Algeria and Cairo. The label WeWantSounds has now remastered and reissued this live recording, “We malo” (‘So what’), made exactly 50 years ago.

African memories and global tributes

Comenzamos explorando dos estupendas y nuevas recopilaciones que nos traen añejas y sabrosas músicas de Guinea y Zimbabue, para rendir después homenaje a un buen número de artistas que nos han dejado recientemente, como el gallego Emilio Cao; de nuevo el irlandés Alan Griffin, con el disco póstumo que le dedica su grupo Alboka, desde el País Vasco; el cantaor extremeño Ramón el Portugués; el clarinetista griego Petroloukas Halkias, y el artista judeo-yemení Aharon Amram.

We begin by exploring two excellent and new compilations that bring us vintage and flavorful music from Guinea and Zimbabwe, and then pay tribute to a good number of artists who have recently passed away, such as the Galician Emilio Cao; once again the Irish Alan Griffin, with the posthumous album dedicated to him by his group Alboka, from the Basque Country; the flamenco singer from Extremadura Ramón el Portugués, the Greek clarinetist Petroloukas Halkias, and the Judeo-Yemeni artist Aharon Amram.

Mustafa Said & Asil Ensemble

El laudista (o udista), cantor, compositor y erudito egipcio Mustafa Said nos hace viajar, en conjunción con el nutrido Asil Ensemble, por quince siglos de poesía y música árabe. Después de su galardón en los Premios de Música Aga Khan, publica este “Maqam pilgrims” a través del sello español Mapamundi Música.

The lute (oud) player, singer, composer and Egyptian scholar Mustafa Said takes us on a journey, together with the rich Asil Ensemble, through fifteen centuries of Arabic poetry and music. After receiving his award at the Aga Khan Music Awards, he releases this “Maqam pilgrims” through the Spanish label Mapamundi Música.
