We begin with Mundofonías’ three favourite records of March 2024, which are the new albums by the Franco-Belgian duo Bipolar Bows, the Egyptian duo Tarek Abdallah & Adel Shams El Din and the Taiwanese trio 3Peoplemusic. A loose review of this month’s Transglobal World Music Chart, determined by a panel of world music specialists from all the continents, of which the Mundofonías‘ presenters are co-creators and co-promoters. Más allá de los clichés y de los artistas más conocidos de la música africana, nos adentramos en territorio desconocido, en el corazón del continente y en el túnel del tiempo, en busca de sonoridades, rítmicas, tímbricas, instrumentos y cantos tan inusuales como sorprendentes. Escuchamos fascinantes grabaciones de artistas populares realizadas en Uganda, los dos Congos, Ruanda y Tanzania durante los años 60 y 70 por Hugh Tracey, Charles Duvelle, David Fanshawe y Jos Gansemans.

Beyond the clichés and the best-known artists of African music, we step into unknown territory, into the heart of the continent and into the tunnel of time, in search of sonorities, rhythms, timbres, instruments and songs that are as unusual as they are surprising. We listen to fascinating recordings of folk artists made in Uganda, the two Congos, Rwanda and Tanzania during the 1960s and 1970s by Hugh Tracey, Charles Duvelle, David Fanshawe and Jos Gansemans.

We listen, from the tunnel of time, to the great Indian singer Kesarbai Kerkar; to Uday Shankar‘s company, in a 1937 recording, with a very young Ravi Shankar; two African songs from the middle of the last century, with Willamu Osale, from Kenya, and Ilunga Patrice with Misomba Victor, from Congo; field recordings made in Morocco in the 70’s; the Venezuelan cuatro of Ali Landaeta; the Brazilian dances of Terezinha Oliveira, Aloisio Bento and Petrúcio de Lima; the Sephardic singing of Jack Mayesh´, from Los Angeles; the Greek rebetiko of the great Rita Abatzi; the vocal art of Ahmad Fakech, from the Alexandria of a century ago; sinuous Hawaiian music, with Linda & the Keaweawaii’s and George Naope; intriguing chants of the Karen people, from Thailand, and the no less fascinating ceremonies of the folk artists of Walantaka, in Java.

Raíces sonoras brasileñas, cubanas, dominicanas y mexicanas resuenan, en combinación con otros aromas musicales, en el primer tramo del programa, para proseguir con aires italianos reprocesados, la raíz sonora del pueblo baskir, requiebros ibéricos y flamencos poniendo una pica en Nueva York. De esto último hablamos en nuestras #Mundofonews, del festival Paco de Lucía Legacy, que tiene lugar en Nueva York, así como de los conciertos de la Folk Alliance International, también en Estados Unidos, y del FIAS, el Festival Internacional de Arte Sacro de Madrid.

Brazilian, Cuban, Dominican and Mexican roots resonate, in combination with other musical aromas, in the first part of the program, to continue with reprocessed Italian airs, the root sounds of the Bashkir people, Iberian experiments and flamencos planting a flag in New York. We talk about the latter in our #Mundofonews, the Paco de Lucía Legacy Festival, which takes place in New York, as well as the concerts of the Folk Alliance International, also in the US, and FIAS, the International Festival of Sacred Art in Madrid.
