Christine Zayed

Christine Zayed es una artista palestina, cantante y tañedora de la cítara kanún. Trasladada a Francia, donde ha podido desarrollar su carrera con una normalidad imposible en su maltratada tierra, ha destacado en diversos proyectos colectivos hasta desembocar en un brillante disco en solitario, este “Kama kuntu” (‘Lo que yo era’), en el que cuenta con la colaboración de sobresalientes músicos de la escena francesa de músicas enraizadas, como los que aparecen en las canciones que escuchamos: Sylvain Barou, Prabhu Edouard o Piers Faccini.

Christine Zayed is a Palestinian artist, singer, and qanun zither player. Having relocated to France, where she has been able to pursue her career with a normalcy impossible in her battered homeland, she has excelled in various collective projects, culminating in a brilliant solo album, “Kama kuntu” (‘What I was’). In this work, she collaborates with outstanding musicians from the French rooted music scene, such as those featured in the songs we hear: Sylvain Barou, Prabhu Edouard, and Piers Faccini.

Repaso libre a la Transglobal World Music Chart de este mes, confeccionada a través de la votación de un panel de divulgadores de las músicas del mundo de todos los continentes, del que los hacedores de Mundofonías somos cocreadores y coimpulsores. En este mes de enero del 2025, la música nos lleva por Mali, Países Bajos, Suecia, Brasil, Japón, Persia, Francia, Burkina Faso, Togo, Córcega, Polonia, Argelia, Palestina y las tierras del pueblo sami, de donde procede la artista que obtiene el número 1 este mes: Mari Boine. ¡Feliz año nuevo!

A loose review of this month’s Transglobal World Music Chart, determined by a panel of world music specialists from all the continents, of which the Mundofonías‘ presenters are co-creators and co-promoters. In this month of January 2025, the music takes us through Mali, the Netherlands, Sweden, Brazil, Japan, Persia, France, Burkina Faso, Togo, Corsica, Poland, Algeria, Palestine, and the lands of the Sámi people, from where the artist who achieves this month’s number 1 hails: Mari Boine. Djam!

“Djam!” es lo que se grita en los momentos de exaltación cuando se baila en el norte de Mali. Quiere decir ‘felicidad’ y es lo que musicalmente nos trae este proyecto, que nace del encuentro de dos inquietos guitarristas: el neerlandés Joep Pelt y el maliense Bounaly Traoré.

“Djam!” is what is shouted in moments of exhilaration when dancing in northern Mali. It means ‘happiness’ and it is what this project musically brings to us, born from the meeting of two visionary guitarists: the Dutch Joep Pelt and the Malian Bounaly Traoré.

Söndörgő

El vituoso y versátil conjunto húngaro Söndörgő nos ofrece un nuevo trabajo en el que navega entre influencias balcánicas, húngaras y jazzísticas. Su título, “Gyezz”, es una adaptación de la voz “jazz” a la ortografía magiar, lo que no es gratuito, porque además cuentan para la ocasión con la complicidad de un renombrado “jazzman”: el saxofonista norteamericano Chris Potter. Es una edición del sello GroundUp Music.

The virtuosic and versatile Hungarian ensemble Söndörgő presents a new work that navigates between Balkan, Hungarian, and jazz influences. Its title, “Gyezz,” is an adaptation of the word “jazz” to Magyar orthography, which is no coincidence, as they have enlisted the collaboration of a renowned jazzman for the occasion: US American saxophonist Chris Potter. This album is released under the GroundUp Music label.

Sväng

Sväng es un cuarteto de armónicas finlandés que está de celebración: veinte años de actividad y diez discos, con este “Svängo nuevo”, editado por Galileo Music. El título ya nos muestra su debilidad por el tango, género muy popular en Finlandia, pero también se inclinan por sonoridades balcánicas y las músicas populares de su tierra, entre otras, todo ello llevado al terreno de sus llamativas armónicas de diferentes tamaños.

Sväng is a Finnish harmonica quartet that is celebrating twenty years of activity and ten albums, with this “Svängo nuevo”, released by Galileo Music. The title already reflects their fondness for tango, a genre very popular in Finland, but they also explore Balkan sounds and the folk music of their homeland, among others, all interpreted through their striking harmonicas of various sizes.

Cerramos el 2024 abriendo un programa tenderete lleno de retales sonoros para hacer tiempo ante la falta de tiempo, con piezas musicales seleccionadas para anteriores programas, pero que se quedaron fuera en su momento. Escuchamos más grabaciones inéditas realizadas el pasado octubre en el WOMEX de Mánchester, viajamos de nuevo al Congreso de la Música Árabe de El Cairo de 1932 y disfrutamos con otros sabrosos retales recuperados que nos traen danzas brasileñas, añejo son cubano, experimentaciones extremoorientales y afroañoranzas desde Mali y el Congo.

We close 2024 opening a patchwork-style program filled with sonic scraps to make the most of time when there isn’t enough of it, featuring musical pieces selected for previous episodes that didn’t make it in the past. We listen to more unpublished recordings from last October at WOMEX in Manchester, journey once again to the 1932 Congress of Arabic Music in Cairo, and enjoy other delightful scraps that bring us Brazilian dances, vintage Cuban son, experimental sounds from the Far East, and Afro-nostalgic tunes from Mali and Congo.

This list showcases Mundofonías’ favorite albums of 2024, presented in a random order. Our selection is non-hierarchical and unnumbered, encompassing those recordings that have been more interesting for us and have given us more pleasure during this year. It’s a completely independent, non-commercial list, not subject to any other consideration than the criteria of the hosts of Mundofonías, solely focusing on the quality and interest of the albums. The albums evaluated to prepare this list are the original ones received in their complete version during this year (or at the end of the previous year), irrespective of where or by whom they have been published or their mode of distribution.
