African inspirations and flamenco stages

Celebramos nuevos discos y nuevas músicas en las que abundan las inspiraciones africanas, conectando Etiopía, Francia, Austria, Ghana, Norteamérica y Mali. Y nos ponemos flamencos en la segunda parte del programa, anunciando interesantes convocatorias musicales en nuestras #Mundofonews, como el Flamenco Festival London o el ciclo Villanos del Flamenco, en Madrid, contando con la voz invitada de su director artístico, Julio Martí. Terminamos también anunciando y celebrando la gira de los 40 años de Perujazz.

We celebrate new albums and new music in which African inspirations abound, connecting Ethiopia, France, Austria, Ghana, North America and Mali. We turn to flamenco in the second half of the programme, announcing interesting musical events in our #Mundofonews such as the Flamenco Festival London and the Villanos del Flamenco series in Madrid, with the guest voice of its artistic director, Julio Martí. We also conclude by announcing and celebrating the 40th-anniversary tour of Perujazz.

De América a África, atravesamos el Atlántico para encontrar en ambas orillas ecos y raíces que se comunican a través de músicas extraídas de discos, la mayoría de ellos recién caídos en nuestra redacción milmundana. Tango, chacarera, samba, son cubano, Latin jazz, columbia y otros aires resuenan desde Argentina, Barcelona, Chile, Brasil, Chicago, Nueva York, Cuba o la República Dominicana. Y, después de saltar el charco, son los sones de Mali, Ghana y el Congo, con conexiones francesas, belgas e indias, los que nos cautivan.

From America to Africa, we cross the Atlantic to find echoes and roots on both shores that communicate through music drawn from albums, most of them freshly arrived at our Mil Mundos editorial desk. Tango, chacarera, samba, son cubano, Latin jazz, columbia and other musical airs resonate from Argentina, Barcelona, Chile, Brazil, Chicago, New York, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. Then, after crossing the ocean, it is the sounds of Mali, Ghana and the Congo, with French, Belgian and Indian connections, that captivate us.

En esta ocasión, se trata de maravillas del histórico sello norteamericano Folkways: una recopilación de 26 piezas del blues más clásico y auténtico, que ahora se reeditan bajo el título de “Classic blues from Smithsonian Folkways Recordings”.

It is always a pleasure to enjoy musical gems from the past and celebrate the fact that they have reached our days and our ears. On this occasion, they are wonders from the historic North American label Folkways: a compilation of 26 pieces of the most classic and authentic blues, now reissued under the title “Classic Blues from Smithsonian Folkways Recordings”.

We travel across the entire planet, discovering its true faces, often hidden: the sounds of a diversity far richer and more fascinating than what we are usually shown. These are new musical works that take us through Balkan-Italian, Kurdish, Azeri, Corsican, Occitan, Catalan, Ibero-Malagasy, Peruvian, Mexican-Chilean and Argentine soundscapes.

No viene en una nave intergaláctica, sino de Brasil. Se llama (o se hace llamar) Spok y su instrumento es el saxofón. En su nuevo trabajo, “Raízes”, experimenta con las raíces afrobrasileñas, junto con otras sonoridades, rítmicas y energías que palpitan por todo el país. A este empeño se suman, entre otros artistas, Chico César, Zeca Baleiro o, en las piezas que escuchamos, Lenine y Maciel Melo.

He does not arrive in an intergalactic spaceship, but from Brazil. His name is (or he calls himself) Spok, and his instrument is the saxophone. In his new album, “Raízes”, he experiments with Afro-Brazilian roots, together with other sounds, rhythms and energies pulsating throughout the country. Joining him in this endeavour are, among other artists, Chico César, Zeca Baleiro and, on the tracks we listen to, Lenine and Maciel Melo.

Seguimos hablando de interesantes festivales que se avecinan, como Globaltica, en Polonia; el Aarschots Folk & Bluegrass Festival, en Bélgica, o Nuits d’Afrique, en Montreal, Canadá. Recibimos a Suzanne Rousseau, directora de este festival quebequés que celebra su 40 aniversario, quien nos detalla lo que tienen preparado para esta edición tan especial. Continuamos homenajeando a dos grandes artistas irlandesas que nos acaban de dejar, Dolores Keane y Moya Brennan, así como al artista y activista musical sueco Bengt Berger, de cuya música disfrutamos, como también de las maravillosas grabaciones de artistas indios que nos descubrió con su sello, Country & Eastern. La música fluye entre Trinidad, Canadá, Suecia, Burkina Faso, la Amazonia brasileña, Irlanda y la India.

We continue talking about interesting upcoming festivals, such as Globaltica in Poland, the Aarschots Folk & Bluegrass Festival in Belgium and Nuits d’Afrique in Montreal, Canada. We welcome Suzanne Rousseau, director of this Québécois festival, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and who tells us about what they have prepared for this particularly special edition. We continue paying tribute to two great Irish artists who have recently left us, Dolores Keane and Moya Brennan, as well as to the Swedish artist and musical activist Bengt Berger, whose music we enjoy, together with the wonderful recordings by Indian artists that he introduced to us through his label Country & Eastern. The music flows between Trinidad, Canada, Sweden, Burkina Faso, the Brazilian Amazon, Ireland and India.

Esta estupenda cantora y multiinstrumentista italiana, Simona Di Gregorio, nos brinda un cautivador disco en el que ahonda principalmente en músicas de raíz siciliana, pero que nos sorprende con una inesperada conexión con la isla canaria de El Hierro y el legado de una venerada y recordada artista popular, Valentina la de Sabinosa, demostrando una vez más que en los cantares de las gentes y los pueblos de cualquier parte del mundo late un corazón común.

This wonderful Italian singer and multi-instrumentalist, Simona Di Gregorio, offers us a captivating album in which she delves primarily into music rooted in Sicily, yet surprises us with an unexpected connection to the Canary island of El Hierro and the legacy of a revered and fondly remembered traditional artist, Valentina la de Sabinosa, demonstrating once again that a common heart beats within the songs of peoples and communities from every corner of the world.

We review the three favourite albums of the month, Mundofonías‘ favorites for June 2026, by the Italian Simona Di Gregorio, the French duo Aptère and the Norwegian Hans Kjorstad. El violinista Hans Kjorstad nos ofrece un disco que nos lleva al corazón de la Noruega más profunda y auténtica. Inspirado por las músicas recogidas entre los artistas populares de diversas regiones y valles de este país de abrupta orografía, ha querido transmitirlas respetando la variedad de afinaciones y rítmicas que en cada lugar se han ido desarrollando, lejos de propuestas uniformadoras y edulcoradas. Esto se plasma en el álbum “Dålågjel”, en el que le acompañan otros violinistas y multiinstrumentistas, imbuidos de similares inquietudes.

<>The violinist Hans Kjorstad offers us an album that takes us to the heart of the deepest and most authentic Norway. Inspired by the music collected from traditional musicians across various regions and valleys of this country of rugged terrain, he has sought to convey it while respecting the diversity of tunings and rhythms that have developed in each place, far removed from homogenising and sweetened approaches. This is reflected in the album “Dålågjel”, on which he is joined by other violinists and multi-instrumentalists who share similar concerns and interests.</>
