Disfrutamos de sabrosos sones cumbiancheros incluidos en esta retrospectiva titulada “Güepa je!”, que vuelve la mirada hacia las celebradas composiciones e interpretaciones de uno de los más venerados representantes de la música colombiana popular del siglo pasado: Edmundo Arias. Es una reciente edición del sello belga Radio Martiko.

We enjoy the flavorful cumbia rhythms included in this retrospective titled “Güepa je!”, which looks back at the celebrated compositions and performances of one of the most revered representatives of Colombian popular music of the last century: Edmundo Arias. It is a recent release by the Belgian label Radio Martiko.

Celebramos la primera edición anual de la LIMúR, la Lista Ibérica de Músicas de Raíz, con lo más granado de las músicas ibéricas del 2024, felicitando al grupo Vigüela por alcanzar el primer puesto. Previamente habíamos abierto con novedades chilenas, incluyendo una reedición de la gran Violeta Parra, y colombianas.

We celebrate the first annual edition of the LIMúR, the Iberian Roots Music Chart, featuring the finest of the Iberian-rooted music from 2024, congratulating the group Vigüela for securing the first place. We had previously opened with Chilean and Colombian new releases, including a reissue of the great Violeta Parra.

Traemos nuevas músicas de espléndidos guitarristas que hacen vibrar cuerdas y corazones, dialogando con otros grandes instrumentistas y trayéndonos ecos que van desde el flamenco hasta Madagascar, de los Balcanes a Argentina o de Brasil a Sudáfrica, con conexiones escocesas, indias, polacas o norteamericanas. Terminamos transitando por otros intrigantes paisajes y ensoñaciones sonoras.

We bring new music from splendid guitarists who make strings and hearts resonate, engaging in dialogue with other great instrumentalists and bringing us echoes ranging from flamenco to Madagascar, from the Balkans to Argentina, or from Brazil to South Africa, with Scottish, Indian, Polish, and North American connections. We conclude by exploring other intriguing soundscapes and dreamlike musical journeys.

Melón Jiménez & Lara Wong

El guitarrista flamenco español Melón Jiménez y la flautista canadiense de raíces chinojaponesas Lara Wong aúnan fuerzas en un disco titulado “Confluencias”, editado por Scatscat Music, en el que, partiendo de los palos flamencos, dialogan con otras músicas del planeta, como, en el caso de las piezas que escuchamos, la brasileña y la india.

The Spanish flamenco guitarist Melón Jiménez and the Canadian flutist of Chinese-Japanese heritage Lara Wong join forces on an album titled “Confluencias,” released by Scatscat Music. Drawing from flamenco styles, they engage in a dialogue with other music traditions from around the world, such as Brazilian and Indian music, as showcased in the pieces we hear.

We bring new music from North America, the Baltic, and East Asia: from Taiwan and Yunnan. We also pay tribute to great artists who recently left us, such as the Cuban Manuel ‘Guajiro’ Mirabal, the Congolese Papa Noël, and the Indian Zakir Hussain.

Comenzamos con los primeros favoritos del año: los favoritos de Mundofonías de enero del 2025, que corresponden a los nuevos trabajos del saxofonista francés, imbuido de africanidad, JB Moundele, al dúo flamenco-global de Melón Jiménez y Lara Wong y al canadiense luisianizado Benoît LeBlanc. Nos embarcamos después en una caravana que nos lleva desde Mali hasta Persia, con la nueva música de Salif Keita, los sones gnawa de Asmaa Hamzaoui, presente en la programación de LIMO, en Madrid, que también comentamos; más sonido gnawa en diálogo con otras expresividades musicales, y otras nuevas o rescatadas propuestas orientalizantes.

We begin with the first favorites of the year: the Mundofonías favorites for January 2025, which feature the new albums of the French saxophonist imbued with African influences, JB Moundele, the flamenco-global duo Melón Jiménez and Lara Wong, and the Canadian with a Louisianan aproach, Benoît LeBlanc. We then embark on a caravan that takes us from Mali to Persia, featuring the new music of Salif Keita, the gnawa sounds of Asmaa Hamzaoui, who is part of the programming at LIMO in Madrid, which we also discuss; more gnawa sounds in dialogue with other musical expressions, as well as other new or rediscovered orientalizing proposals.

Estas dos artistas chinas entrelazan las cuerdas de sus instrumentos en un delicado disco titulado “Prelude to the divine realm” (‘Preludio al reino divino’), que se publicará próximamente a través de Naxos World. Ellas son Gao Hong, intérprete de laúd pipa, y Zhao Xiaoxia, tañedora de la cítara guqin.

These two Chinese artists intertwine the strings of their instruments in a delicate album titled “Prelude to the Divine Realm,” which will soon be released by Naxos World. They are Gao Hong, a pipa lute player, and Zhao Xiaoxia, a guqin zither player.

Las corrientes marinas, aéreas y musicales del Atlántico Norte nos llevan de una orilla a otra, de un continente a otro, con discos aparecidos recientemente. Sones que nos llegan desde Inglaterra, Escocia, Irlanda, Bretaña y otros parajes de Francia, en la parte europea, y, del otro lado del océano, desde Canadá y la costa este de Estados Unidos.

The sea, air, and musical streams of the North Atlantic carry us from one shore to another, from one continent to another, with recently released albums. Sounds arriving from England, Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, and other parts of France on the European side, and, across the ocean, from Canada and the East Coast of the United States.

Petroloukas Halkias & Vasilis Kostas

Dos estupendos músicos griegos de muy diferente extracción, pero en perfecta combinación, nos regalan hoy su arte: el veterano clarinetista de sinuoso fraseo Petroloukas Halkias y el bastante más joven virtuoso del laúto, el laúd griego, Vasilis Kostas. Escuchamos piezas del segundo volumen de su “The soul of Epirus”, ‘el alma del Épiro’, que nos acerca las intrigantes tradiciones sonoras de esa región griega.

Two outstanding Greek musicians from very different backgrounds, yet in perfect harmony, share their art with us today: the veteran clarinetist with a sinuous phrasing, Petroloukas Halkias, and the much younger virtuoso of the laouto, the Greek lute, Vasilis Kostas. We listen to pieces from the second volume of their “The Soul of Epirus”, which brings us closer to the intriguing musical traditions of this Greek region.
