These two Chinese artists intertwine the strings of their instruments in a delicate album titled “Prelude to the Divine Realm,” which will soon be released by Naxos World. They are Gao Hong, a pipa lute player, and Zhao Xiaoxia, a guqin zither player.

The sea, air, and musical streams of the North Atlantic carry us from one shore to another, from one continent to another, with recently released albums. Sounds arriving from England, Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, and other parts of France on the European side, and, across the ocean, from Canada and the East Coast of the United States.

Petroloukas Halkias & Vasilis Kostas

Dos estupendos músicos griegos de muy diferente extracción, pero en perfecta combinación, nos regalan hoy su arte: el veterano clarinetista de sinuoso fraseo Petroloukas Halkias y el bastante más joven virtuoso del laúto, el laúd griego, Vasilis Kostas. Escuchamos piezas del segundo volumen de su “The soul of Epirus”, ‘el alma del Épiro’, que nos acerca las intrigantes tradiciones sonoras de esa región griega.

Two outstanding Greek musicians from very different backgrounds, yet in perfect harmony, share their art with us today: the veteran clarinetist with a sinuous phrasing, Petroloukas Halkias, and the much younger virtuoso of the laouto, the Greek lute, Vasilis Kostas. We listen to pieces from the second volume of their “The Soul of Epirus”, which brings us closer to the intriguing musical traditions of this Greek region.

Iberian delicacies

Programa dedicado a saborear delicias ibéricas de reciente publicación, incluyendo el repaso a la LIMúR, Lista Ibérica de Músicas de Raíz del último trimestre del 2024, con una recopilación de Al Andaluz Project situada en el número uno. Las raíces ibéricas, que nos llevan por Sevilla, Madrid, Portugal, Castilla, Valencia, Cataluña o Menorca, se nos enredan con aires e influencias brasileñas, norteafricanas, caboverdianas o cumbancheras.

A program dedicated to savoring Iberian delicacies recently released, including a review of the LIMúR, the Iberian Roots Music Chart from the last quarter of 2024, with a compilation by Al Andaluz Project taking the number one spot. The Iberian roots, which take us through Seville, Madrid, Portugal, Castile, Valencia, Catalonia, and Menorca, intertwine with Brazilian, North African, Cape Verdean, and cumbanchero airs and influences.

Batsükh Dorj es un artista tuvano de Mongolia que nos acerca el sorprendente arte del canto difónico “khöömei”, consistente en producir dos sonidos simultáneamente con la boca, entre otros estilos. Este disco, “Ögbelerim: Music for my ancestors”, surge del entusiasta trabajo del colectivo Routes Nomades y ha sido publicado por Buda Musique.

Batsükh Dorj is a Tuvan artist from Mongolia who brings us the astonishing art of the “khöömei” overtone singing, which involves producing two simultaneous sounds with the mouth, among other styles. This album, “Ögbelerim: Music for my ancestors”, is the result of the enthusiastic work of the Routes Nomades collective and has been released by Buda Musique.

Christine Zayed

Christine Zayed es una artista palestina, cantante y tañedora de la cítara kanún. Trasladada a Francia, donde ha podido desarrollar su carrera con una normalidad imposible en su maltratada tierra, ha destacado en diversos proyectos colectivos hasta desembocar en un brillante disco en solitario, este “Kama kuntu” (‘Lo que yo era’), en el que cuenta con la colaboración de sobresalientes músicos de la escena francesa de músicas enraizadas, como los que aparecen en las canciones que escuchamos: Sylvain Barou, Prabhu Edouard o Piers Faccini.

Christine Zayed is a Palestinian artist, singer, and qanun zither player. Having relocated to France, where she has been able to pursue her career with a normalcy impossible in her battered homeland, she has excelled in various collective projects, culminating in a brilliant solo album, “Kama kuntu” (‘What I was’). In this work, she collaborates with outstanding musicians from the French rooted music scene, such as those featured in the songs we hear: Sylvain Barou, Prabhu Edouard, and Piers Faccini.

Djam!

“Djam!” es lo que se grita en los momentos de exaltación cuando se baila en el norte de Mali. Quiere decir ‘felicidad’ y es lo que musicalmente nos trae este proyecto, que nace del encuentro de dos inquietos guitarristas: el neerlandés Joep Pelt y el maliense Bounaly Traoré.

“Djam!” is what is shouted in moments of exhilaration when dancing in northern Mali. It means ‘happiness’ and it is what this project musically brings to us, born from the meeting of two visionary guitarists: the Dutch Joep Pelt and the Malian Bounaly Traoré.

Söndörgő

El vituoso y versátil conjunto húngaro Söndörgő nos ofrece un nuevo trabajo en el que navega entre influencias balcánicas, húngaras y jazzísticas. Su título, “Gyezz”, es una adaptación de la voz “jazz” a la ortografía magiar, lo que no es gratuito, porque además cuentan para la ocasión con la complicidad de un renombrado “jazzman”: el saxofonista norteamericano Chris Potter. Es una edición del sello GroundUp Music.

The virtuosic and versatile Hungarian ensemble Söndörgő presents a new work that navigates between Balkan, Hungarian, and jazz influences. Its title, “Gyezz,” is an adaptation of the word “jazz” to Magyar orthography, which is no coincidence, as they have enlisted the collaboration of a renowned jazzman for the occasion: US American saxophonist Chris Potter. This album is released under the GroundUp Music label.
