El 17 de septiembre del 2026, al día siguiente de la emisión de este programa, se celebrará la edición conmemorativa del 50 aniversario del Festival de los Pueblos Ibéricos, que tuvo lugar en el campus de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid en 1976, a pocos meses de la muerte del dictador, cuando los anhelos de libertad y también el deseo de reconocimiento de la diversidad de nuestras tierras y culturas clamaban por dejarse oír, incluyendo en ese sentimiento a Portugal, recién salido también de una dictadura. Escuchamos al recordado José Afonso, el gran Zeca, presente en la primera edición, y a la igualmente grande cantora mallorquina Maria del Mar Bonet, quien repite en la presente edición, al igual que Luis Pastor o Manuel Gerena, entre muchos otros artistas. On 17 September 2026, the day after this programme is broadcast, the commemorative edition marking the 50th anniversary of the Festival de los Pueblos Ibéricos will take place. The original festival was held on the campus of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 1976, just a few months after the dictator’s death, at a time when aspirations for freedom and the desire for recognition of the diversity of our lands and cultures were clamouring to be heard, with Portugal, also newly emerged from a dictatorship, included in that shared feeling. We listen to the much-missed José Afonso, the great Zeca, who took part in the first edition, and to the equally great Mallorcan singer Maria del Mar Bonet, who returns for the present edition, as do Luis Pastor and Manuel Gerena, among many other artists. Abrimos con los tres discos favoritos de Mundofonías de septiembre del 2026, a cargo del Cuadra Collective, desde Escandinavia, del trío libanés Tilt y del artista afgano de cultura tayika Panjshanbe Maftun. Continuamos con más ritos, ecos, encuentros y experimentos sonoros, que nos llevan por Bulgaria, Bélgica o la India, y enlazan Norteamérica con Turquía e Irán, Polonia con Hungría, Grecia con Noruega y el Líbano con Italia, Turquía y Grecia.

We open with the three Mundofonías’ favourite albums of September 2026, by Cuadra Collective, from Scandinavia, the Lebanese trio Tilt and the Afghan artist of Tajik culture Panjshanbe Maftun. We continue with more rites, echoes, encounters and sonic experiments, which take us through Bulgaria, Belgium and India, and connect North America with Turkey and Iran, Poland with Hungary, Greece with Norway and Lebanon with Italy, Turkey and Greece.

Ngulmiya

El artista australiano Ngulmiya, procedente de las comunidades indígenas del norte del continente, ha llevado sus expresivos cantos tradicionales a los escenarios del mundo. Y ha querido titular su último trabajo como “Catalunya”, en homenaje a la tierra del guitarrista Pau Figueres, con quien ha colaborado estrechamente en su elaboración.

The Australian artist Ngulmiya, from the Indigenous communities of the north of the continent, has taken his expressive traditional songs to stages around the world. And he has chosen to title his latest work “Catalunya”, in homage to the land of guitarist Pau Figueres, with whom he has worked closely on its creation.

Balogh Melinda, Erdőfű, Janusz Prusinowski Kompania

Después de cruzarse en diversos festivales y encontrarse en diversas circunstancias, estos artistas húngaros y polacos decidieron emprender un trabajo conjunto que revelase esa afinidad de interpretar las músicas de sus tradiciones de la manera más genuina. Se trata de la cantora magiar Balogh Melinda, los también húngaros Erdőfű y la Janusz Prusinowski Kompania, desde Polonia, con este disco: “Miedza | Mezsgye | Balk” (‘Linde’).

After crossing paths at various festivals and meeting in different circumstances, these Hungarian and Polish artists decided to embark on a joint project that would reveal their shared affinity for performing the music of their traditions in the most genuine way. They are Magyar singer Balogh Melinda, the also Hungarian Erdőfű and the Janusz Prusinowski Kompania, from Poland, with this album: “Miedza | Mezsgye | Balk”.

Como un colibrí que revuela por el mundo, esta edición de Mundofonías te regala maravillosas músicas: estrenos latinoamericanos, festivales inminentes y sentidos homenajes. Nuestras #Mundofonews nos traen noticias de la Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla, del Festival Arabesques de Montpellier y del Festival Intercéltico de Orejo. Nos acordamos de artistas y personas relacionadas con las músicas de los pueblos recientemente fallecidas, como el uruguayo Rubén Rada, el cineasta cronista de las culturas gitanas Tony Gatlif, el tocaor flamenco Pepe Habichuela, el también flamenco Ricardo Pachón, productor determinante en el devenir de este arte en las últimas décadas, y el caboverdiano Bino Branco, figura del funaná y del grupo Ferro Gaita. La música nos lleva por Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Francia, India, Rumanía, Andalucía, el Líbano, Galicia y Cabo Verde.

Like a hummingbird fluttering around the world, this edition of Mundofonías gives you wonderful music: Latin American premieres, imminent festivals and heartfelt tributes. Our #Mundofonews brings us news of the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla, the Festival Arabesques in Montpellier and the Festival Intercéltico de Orejo. We remember artists and people connected with the music of peoples who have recently passed away, such as the Uruguayan Rubén Rada, filmmaker and chronicler of Roma cultures Tony Gatlif, flamenco guitarist Pepe Habichuela, the also flamenco Ricardo Pachón, a decisive producer in the development of this art over recent decades, and the Cape Verdean Bino Branco, a figure of funaná and of the group Ferro Gaita. The music takes us through Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, France, India, Romania, Andalusia, Lebanon, Galicia and Cape Verde.

Desde ayer y hasta el domingo 20 de septiembre se está desarrollando en Montpellier, en el sur de Francia, en Occitania, la XXI edición del Festival Arabesques, que reúne artistas de raíz o procedencia árabe y otras conectadas en una cita que no solo propone música, sino también otras actividades culturales, así como iniciativas sociales y solidarias. Este año se presenta como novedad la primera edición del Arabesques Music Forum, una iniciativa abierta al público que reunirá a artistas, programadores y divulgadores del área mediterránea, presentando un nutrido conjunto de actuaciones y conversaciones. Nos acompañan musicalmente la argelina Souad Massi y el proyecto franco-marroquí Samifati & Transe Gnawa Express.

Since yesterday and until Sunday, September 20, the 21st edition of the Arabesques Festival is taking place in Montpellier, in the south of France, in Occitania, bringing together artists of Arab roots or origin and others connected to them in an event that offers not only music, but also other cultural activities, as well as social and solidarity initiatives. This year, a new feature is the first edition of the Arabesques Music Forum, an initiative open to the public that will bring together artists, programmers and cultural communicators from the Mediterranean area, presenting a substantial programme of performances and conversations. Providing the music are Algerian Souad Massi and the Franco-Moroccan project Samifati & Transe Gnawa Express.

Ferro Gaita

El grupo caboverdiano Ferro Gaita toma su nombre de los dos instrumentos esenciales del irresistible y acelerado género en el que se inspiran: el funaná. Son el ferro o “ferrinho”, una barra metálica que se raspa con una varilla, y la gaita, que en Cabo Verde es el nombre que se le da al acordeón diatónico. Con este disco, “Tokador di gaita”, conmemoran sus 30 años de carrera, celebrando y recordando igualmente a destacados músicos del archipiélago. Con este programa homenajeamos también a Bino Branco, uno de los fundadores del grupo, recientemente fallecido.

The Cape Verdean group Ferro Gaita takes its name from the two instruments at the heart of the irresistible, fast-paced genre that inspires them: funaná. These are the ferro, or ferrinho, a metal bar scraped with a rod, and the gaita, the name used in Cape Verde for the diatonic accordion. With this album,  “Tokador di Gaita”, they mark 30 years of their career, while also celebrating and remembering some of the archipelago’s most prominent musicians. With this programme, we also pay tribute to Bino Branco, one of the group’s founders, who recently passed away.

Repaso libre a la Transglobal World Music Chart de este mes, confeccionada a través de la votación de un panel de divulgadores de las músicas del mundo de todos los continentes, del que los hacedores de Mundofonías somos cocreadores y coimpulsores. Las músicas nos traen aires cubanos, egipcios, finlandeses, azerbaiyanos, afganos, húngaro-macedonios y mongoles, para terminar con el número uno del mes, el nuevo disco de los japoneses tropicalizados Minyo Crusaders. En esta edición de Mundofonías, además, acuñamos por primera vez la palabra “uneto” en castellano, de la que no hemos encontrado registros anteriores.

A free overview of this month’s Transglobal World Music Chart, compiled through the voting of a panel of world music specialists from all continents, of which the makers of Mundofonías are co-creators and co-promoters. The music brings us Cuban, Egyptian, Finnish, Azerbaijani, Afghan, Hungarian-Macedonian and Mongolian airs, before ending with the number one of the month: the new album by the tropicalised Japanese musicians Minyo Crusaders. In this edition of Mundofonías, moreover, we coin the word “uneto” in Spanish for the first time, for which we have found no previous records.

Desde Japón, con amor (“From Japan with love”), se nos acercan estos japoneses tropicalizados de Minyo Crusaders, con su nuevo y, como es habitual, estupendo disco, publicado por el prestigioso sello Blue Note. En él siguen la línea de anteriores trabajos, enhebrando cantos tradicionales japoneses (minyo) con cálidas rítmicas y armonías de cumbia, “afrobeat”, dub o bugalú.

“From Japan with Love”, these tropicalised Japanese musicians of Minyo Crusaders come our way with their new and, as usual, excellent album, released by the prestigious label Blue Note. On it, they continue in the line of their previous works, threading traditional Japanese songs (minyo) together with warm rhythms and harmonies of cumbia, afrobeat, dub and boogaloo.

Escuchamos a este conjunto de maestros de la música clásica persa que componen el Sepidar Ensemble. Adelantamos una pieza inédita de sus próximas ediciones discográficas y anunciamos dos citas con ellos en Madrid: su concierto el sábado 5 de septiembre en Espacio Ronda y una mesa redonda el día anterior en el Centro Persépolis, en la que dialogaremos con los miembros del grupo y que tendré el gusto de moderar en compañía de dos expertos como Sara Islán y Michel Gasco. We listen to this ensemble of masters of Persian classical music who make up the Sepidar Ensemble. We preview an unreleased piece from their forthcoming album releases and announce two events with them in Madrid: their concert on Saturday 5 September at Espacio Ronda and a round table the previous day at Centro Persépolis, where we will talk with the members of the group and which I will have the pleasure of moderating alongside two experts, Sara Islán and Michel Gasco.
