Celtia, Iberia, Amazonia and Italy

Repasamos nuevos discos que nos hacen viajar por sonoridades célticas, desde Escocia, Norteamérica y Polonia. Por tierras ibéricas escuchamos cantos en catalán y en castellano, para saltar después al corazón de la Amazonia, para bailar cumbia en Perú, y entonar cantos indígenas en Brasil. Tras una escala en Buenos Aires, nuestro destino musical está en Italia, con conexiones norteafricanas y, de nuevo, ibéricas.

We review new albums that take us on a journey through Celtic sounds, from Scotland, North America and Poland. Across Iberian lands we hear songs in Catalan and Spanish, then leap into the heart of the Amazon, to dance to cumbia in Peru, and sing indigenous chants in Brazil. After a stop in Buenos Aires, our musical destination is Italy, with North African and once again Iberian connections.

Para ser fiel a ambas pasiones, ideó un instrumento de doble mástil, mitad sarod, mitad guitarra eléctrica, con el que desarrollar un peculiar estilo que se plasma en discos como su nuevo trabajo: “Liquid reality”.

This is the story of a young man from Bombay, fascinated both by the masters of Indian music and the guitar heroes of rock. To stay true to both passions, he devised a double-neck instrument, half sarod, half electric guitar, with which he developed a unique style reflected in albums such as his new album: “Liquid reality”.

Desde la isla de La Reunión, en el Índico, cerca de Madagascar, el grupo Votia nos ofrece su debut discográfico con el sello sueco Ajabu!, “Vié kaz”, que nos acerca el vibrante pulso del maloya de la isla y nos recuerda los no muy lejanos tiempos en que esta expresión era perseguida.

From the island of Réunion, in the Indian Ocean, near Madagascar, the group Votia presents their debut album with the Swedish label Ajabu!, “Vié kaz”, bringing us the vibrant pulse of the island’s maloya and reminding us of the not-so-distant times when this expression was persecuted.

Autana Trío

Desde lo alto del cerro Autana se divisan (o casi) las tierras de los tres países de donde proceden estos artistas que han unido fuerzas en la ciudad de Valencia: Venezuela, Brasil y Colombia. En este su primer disco de larga duración, “Autana”, autoproducido, estos tres músicos hacen valer su maestría sobre las cuerdas de sus instrumentos.

From the top of Cerro Autana, one can see (or almost) the lands of the three countries from which these artists, who have joined forces in the city of Valencia, come: Venezuela, Brazil, and Colombia. In their first full-length album, “Autana”, self-produced, these three musicians showcase their mastery over the strings of their instruments.

Cumbres y riberas de Sudamérica
Summits and shores of South America

Viajamos entre las alturas de unos Andes peruanos reimaginados y las del cerro Autana, donde se juntan Venezuela, Colombia y Brasil, países de donde proceden los miembros del grupo que adopta ese nombre. Bajamos también a las riberas del Atlántico, navegando desde el Río de la Plata, para llegar, tras diversas escalas, al Nordeste brasileño, topándonos también con la amarga herencia de esclavitud y discriminación de los navíos negreros que llega hasta hoy.

We travel between the heights of some reimagined Peruvian Andes and those of Cerro Autana, where Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil come together,  the countries of origin of the members of the group that bears that name. We also descend to the shores of the Atlantic, sailing from the Río de la Plata, and arriving, after several stopovers, in the Brazilian Nordeste, also encountering the bitter legacy of slavery and discrimination from the slave ships, a legacy that still resonates today.

El acordeonista griego Thanos Stavridis, en compañía de los excelentes instrumentistas de su grupo Drom, acelera nuestras pulsaciones con este vibrante y estupendo disco, orgullosamente autoproducido, “Fygame” (‘¡Vamos!’), que nos lleva por diferentes parajes de los Balcanes y alrededores.

The Greek accordionist Thanos Stavridis, together with the excellent instrumentalists of his band Drom, quickens our pulse with this vibrant and superb album, proudly self-produced, “Fygame” (‘Let’s go!’), which takes us through various landscapes of the Balkans and surrounding areas.
