Echamos la vista atrás en busca de joyas musicales del pasado de África y América Latina, si bien nos llegan a través de ediciones recientes, presentes e incluso futuras. Escuchamos clásicos del colombiano Edmundo Arias y otros recogidos en estupendas compilaciones, como «Cumbia cumbia cumbia!!!», «Congo Funk!: Sound madness from the shores of the mighty Congo river (Kinshasa / Brazzaville, 1969-1982)», «Les Belgicains: Na tango ya Covadia, 1964-70», «Super disco pirata: De Tepito para el mundo, 1965-1980», que se publica hoy mismo, o «Zanzibara 11: Congo in Dar», que lo hará ya en enero del 2025.

We look back in search of musical gems from the past in Africa and Latin America, though they come to us through recent, current, and even future editions. We listen to classics from Colombian artist Edmundo Arias and others featured in outstanding compilations such as «Cumbia Cumbia Cumbia!!!», «Congo Funk!: Sound Madness from the Shores of the Mighty Congo River (Kinshasa / Brazzaville, 1969-1982)», «Les Belgicains: Na Tango Ya Covadia, 1964-70», «Super Disco Pirata: De Tepito para el Mundo, 1965-1980», which is released today, and «Zanzibara 11: Congo in Dar», set to be published in January 2025.

Bassidi Koné

El virtuoso percusionista maliense del pueblo bwa Bassidi Koné firma un excelente primer disco con su nombre. Un trabajo repleto de saber y sabor, a la vez que exento de edulcorantes o aditivos, lo cual es muy de agradecer y de disfrutar. Lo edita el sello de Bamako Remote Records.

The virtuosic Malian percussionist from the Bwa people, Bassidi Koné, delivers an outstanding debut album under his name. A work full of knowledge and flavor, free from sweeteners or additives, making it truly enjoyable and appreciated. It is released by Bamako-based label Remote Records.

We begin by looking to the future, with albums that will be released soon, bringing the sounds of West Africa in various combinations. We continue with the compilation «Folk and World Music Galore, Vol. 3», which gathers recent releases from the CPL-Music label, taking us through the Baltic countries, Finland, Canada and Russia, with Jordanian, Palestinian and Ethiopian connections. We end with more new releases and sonic blends from the United States and Spain.

Abrimos con los tres discos favoritos de Mundofonías de noviembre del 2024, que nos acercan, con sabor cubano, la Orquesta Akokán, el dúo francés Hadouk y, también desde Francia, la combinación del gamelán de Bali y las percusiones de Oriente Próximo del proyecto Polyphème, con Wassim Halal y el Gamelan Puspawarna. Seguimos con conexiones euroárabes, que dibujan líneas entre Siria, Noruega, España o Marruecos, y terminamos con varios ejemplos del recopilatorio «Festival donso ngoni, vol. 1», con intensas y auténticas músicas desde Mali.

We open with Mundofonías’ top three favorite albums of November 2024, bringing us Cuban flavor with Orquesta Akokán, the French duo Hadouk, and also from France, the blend of Balinese gamelan and Middle Eastern percussion in the Polyphème project with Wassim Halal and the Gamelan Puspawarna. From a divided Cyprus, Buzz’ Ayaz brings together musicians from both sides of the border that crosses the heart of the island and splits its capital, Nicosia, in two, advocating for brotherhood between the different communities that live there. This album, released by Glitterbeat Records and filled with roots and psychedelia, marks the recording debut of the new project by Antonis Antoniou, also the driving force behind Monsieur Doumani and Trio Tekke.

Rastreamos una inesperada conexión balinesa, a través de las intrincadas texturas y estructuras de su gamelán, que nos lleva por Japón, con Taikuh Jikang, y por Oriente Próximo y Francia, con el proyecto Polyphème, que impulsan el percusionista franco-libanés Wassim Halal y el parisino Gamelan Puspawarna. Asistimos también al encuentro de las percusiones de Wassim con el maestro de los instrumentos de viento de Bretaña Erwan Keravec, de quien escuchamos también sus fascinantes aproximaciones a la música de Terry Riley y Philip Glass, recreándola a base de gaitas y bombardas bretonas.

We trace an unexpected Balinese connection through the intricate textures and structures of its gamelan, which takes us through Japan, with Taikuh Jikang, and through the Middle East and France, with the Polyphème project, led by the Franco-Lebanese percussionist Wassim Halal and the Parisian Gamelan Puspawarna. We also witness the encounter of Wassim’s percussion with the Breton wind instrument master Erwan Keravec, from whom we also hear fascinating interpretations of the music of Terry Riley and Philip Glass, recreated with Breton bagpipes and bombards.

Repaso libre a la Transglobal World Music Chart de este mes, confeccionada a través de la votación de un panel de divulgadores de las músicas del mundo de todos los continentes, del que los hacedores de Mundofonías somos cocreadores y coimpulsores. En este mes de noviembre del 2024, la música nos lleva por Norteamérica, Tuvá, Bélgica, Cabo Verde, São Tomé e Príncipe, Nigeria y encontramos también una interesante conexión fino-maliense. El número 1 es para el disco «perdido» del recordado cantor pakistaní de qawwali Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

A loose review of this month’s Transglobal World Music Chart, determined by a panel of world music specialists from all the continents, of which the Mundofonías‘ presenters are co-creators and co-promoters. In this month of November 2024, the music takes us through North America, Tuva, Belgium, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, Nigeria, and we also find an interesting Finnish-Malian connection.
