Gatherings, metamorphoses and tributes

Reunimos músicas poliédricas y metamórficas, en las cuales también estilos y artistas de diversos orígenes confluyen. Viajamos entre Madagascar, La Reunión, Grecia, Serbia y también con encuentros entre músicos persas, burkineses, franceses y canadienses. Pero previamente habíamos abierto con el recuerdo a los míticos Pata Negra, aunando flamenco y blues, en homenaje al recientemente desaparecido Rafael Amador.

We bring together polyhedral and metamorphic music in which styles and artists of diverse origins converge. We travel between Madagascar, La Réunion, Greece and Serbia, and we also bring encounters between Persian, Burkinabé, French and Canadian musicians. But we had previously opened with a remembrance of the legendary Pata Negra, uniting flamenco and blues, in tribute to the recently passed away Rafael Amador.

Tres artistas de raíces persas, afrooccidentales y francesas unen sus pasiones y experiencias musicales que revelan una conexión africana que atraviesa continentes: desde Burkina Faso a la pulsión del ethiojazz en el corazón de París o a las poco conocidas raíces africanas de comunidades del sur de Irán. Es Hami Hamoo, que presenta su primer disco, “Siya”, editado por Accords Croisés.

Three artists of Persian, Afro-Western and French roots unite their passions and musical experiences, revealing an African connection that spans continents: from Burkina Faso to the pulse of ethiojazz in the heart of Paris, and to the little-known African roots of communities in southern Iran. It’s Hami Hamoo, presenting their first album, “Siya”, released by Accords Croisés.

Repasamos el resultado y algunas de las músicas que más interesantes nos han parecido de entre las galardonadas en varias convocatorias de las que los hacedores de Mundofonías somos miembros del jurado: Balkan World Music Chart, Russian World Music Chart y Russian World Music Awards, en las que se ha elegido los más destacados discos del 2025 en sus respectivos ámbitos. Escuchamos músicas de raíces croatas, serbias, húngaras, eslovenas, rusas, tuvanas y griegas.

We review the results and some of the music we have found most interesting among the winners of several calls in which the makers of Mundofonías serve as jury members: the Balkan World Music Chart, the Russian World Music Chart and the Russian World Music Awards, where the most outstanding albums of 2025 have been selected in their respective fields. We listen to music with Croatian, Serbian, Hungarian, Slovenian, Russian, Tuvan and Greek roots.

Desde Hungría nos llega la fresquísima música de este grupo de jóvenes virtuosos, destinados a representar a su generación entre los grandes grupos de su país. Con una especial querencia por las músicas eslavas meridionales y balcánicas, nos presentan su nuevo trabajo “Tri, i” (‘Tres y’).

From Hungary comes the fresh and vibrant music of this group of young virtuosos, destined to represent their generation among the leading ensembles of their country. With a particular fondness for South Slavic and Balkan music, they present their new work “Tri, i” (‘Three and’).

Disfrutamos con músicas de reciente publicación que nos muestran diversos tratamientos a partir de la raíz sonora y de la historia musical de estas dos penínsulas, la ibérica y la itálica, así como de las islas de su entorno. En Portugal recordamos clásicos y también nos lanzamos a experimentaciones o a conexiones africanas, que también encontramos en el corazón de la Meseta, entreveradas con aires castellanos y extremeños. Seguimos con jazz de raíces baleares, viajamos a un medievo italiano recreado y terminamos en el sur de este país, por Apulia y Calabria.

We enjoy recently released music that shows us various approaches based on the sonic roots and musical history of these two peninsulas, the Iberian and the Italian, as well as the islands around them. In Portugal we recall classics and also venture into experimentation or African connections, which we also find in the heart of the Meseta, interwoven with Castilian and Extremaduran airs. We continue with jazz of Balearic roots, travel to a recreated Italian Middle Ages, and finish in the south of this country, through Apulia and Calabria.

Brazil, Guinea and Indonesia

Viajamos entre tres continentes, tres países, dos hemisferios, varios océanos, diversas épocas y mil culturas sonoras. Comenzamos en Brasil, con artistas radicados en su país y también con conexiones europeas. Continuamos en Guinea, viajando también en el tiempo, a la época de la independencia y las revoluciones contra el colonialismo, y terminamos en Indonesia, con nuevos aires que nos llegan desde Bali y una experiencia panindonesia.

We travel across three continents, three countries, two hemispheres, several oceans, different eras and a thousand sound cultures. We begin in Brazil, with artists based in their own country and also with European connections. We continue in Guinea, travelling back in time to the era of independence and the revolutions against colonialism, and we end in Indonesia, with new sounds reaching us from Bali and a pan-Indonesian experience.

“A djinn and a hunter went walking” (‘Un djinn, un genio o espíritu benévolo, y un cazador se fueron caminando): ese es el título del álbum conjunto de estos dos artistas malienses que se ha venido fraguando desde hace más de una década. Ellos son Neba Solo y Benego Diakité, tañedores, respectivamente, del xilófono balafón y el arpa donsongoni, a la vez que representantes de las culturas senufo y donso, de agricultores y cazadores. Sus mundos y sus músicas se encuentran en este disco que el sello Nonesuch publica exactamente el mismo día de emisión de este programa.

“A djinn and a hunter went walking”: that is the title of the joint album by these two Malian artists, a project that has been taking shape for more than a decade. They are Neba Solo and Benego Diakité, players respectively of the balafon xylophone and the donsongoni harp, as well as representatives of the Senufo and Donso cultures—of farmers and hunters. Their worlds and their music come together on this record, which the label Nonesuch is releasing on the very same day this program is broadcast.

Músicas tan variopintas como el mundo nos sorprenden en esta edición de Mundofonías, hablándonos de dragones, lágrimas, perlas, ramas, páramos, sopas, aperitivos, voces, huellas, casamientos y descasamientos. Suena música con aires de Armenia, Albania, Alemania, los Balcanes, los países nórdicos y los ibéricos, Argentina, Perú y Colombia, a partir de muy recientes ediciones discográficas que nos ofrecen mil tratamientos a partir de la música de raíz, desde rudas guitarras a los ecos de las voces indígenas.

Music as diverse as the world itself surprises us in this edition of Mundofonías, speaking of dragons, tears, pearls, branches, moors, soups, appetisers, voices, footprints, weddings and unweddings. We hear music with flavours of Armenia, Albania, Germany, the Balkans, the Nordic and the Iberian countries, Argentina, Peru and Colombia, drawn from very recent record releases that offer a thousand different approaches to root music, from raw guitars to the echoes of indigenous voices.
