Escuchamos el canto de esta artista iraní, Bahar Movahed, que tuvo que dejar su tierra para que su voz no quedara confinada al secreto y la clandestinidad. En este su nuevo disco interpreta composiciones de Navid Dehghan, músico que sigue residiendo en el interior del país.

We listen to the singing of this Iranian artist, Bahar Movahed, who had to leave her homeland so that her voice would not remain confined to secrecy and hiding. On this, her new album, she performs compositions by Navid Dehghan, a musician who still lives inside the country.

The world in Sofia and an arabesque finale

Repasamos las muy interesantes jornadas del reciente festival A to Jazz, celebrado en Sofía, la capital búlgara, especialmente la primera jornada del mismo, dedicada a presentaciones o showcases de artistas de muy diversos parajes, en una estupenda selección en la que la mundófona Araceli Tzigane tuvo bastante que ver, ya que fue miembro del jurado de selección. Las músicas nos traen sones italo-balcánicos, anatolios, del sur de la India, de La Reunión, de la Barcelona mestiza, rebelde y cumbianchera, de Hungría, Portugal y Bulgaria, además de un encuentro franco-sudafricano. Terminamos anticipando, a ritmo de gnawa electrificado, el próximo festival Arabesques de Montpellier, Francia.

We review the very interesting sessions of the recent A to Jazz festival, held in Sofia, the Bulgarian capital, especially its first day, devoted to showcases by artists from very diverse places, in an excellent selection in which Mundofonías’ Araceli Tzigane had quite a hand, as she was a member of the selection jury. The music brings us Italian-Balkan, Anatolian and South Indian sounds, as well as from Réunion, from multicultural, rebellious and cumbianchera Barcelona, from Hungary, Portugal and Bulgaria, along with a French-South African encounter. We end by anticipating, to the rhythm of electrified gnawa, the upcoming Arabesques festival in Montpellier, France.

Medusa Quartet

Las componentes del Medusa Quartet, este interesante cuarteto de cuerdas ubicado en Canadá que incorpora instrumentos no muy usuales en estas formaciones, nos invitan a un viaje musical que nos lleva, en las piezas que escuchamos, por Irlanda, Norteamérica y Armenia, aunque en su álbum nos hacen recorrer otros muchos parajes musicales.

The members of the Medusa Quartet, this interesting string quartet based in Canada that incorporates instruments not very usual in such formations, invite us on a musical journey that takes us, in the pieces we hear, through Ireland, North America and Armenia, although on their album they lead us through many other musical landscapes.

Descubriendo tesoros y conectando mundos
Discovering treasures and connecting worlds

Emprendemos una exitosa y fructífera expedición que nos lleva por todo el mundo, encontrando tesoros clásicos y descubriendo joyas escondidas de hoy en día, en un programa en el que diversos proyectos nos revelan perspectivas muy interesantes que nos hacen reflexionar sobre la interconexión de las músicas y los pueblos. Viajamos entre Anatolia, Italia y Grecia, seguimos con clásicos de Azerbaiyán y del blues norteamericano, para terminar descubriendo músicas que ahora vibran en Malawi.

We set out on a successful and fruitful expedition that takes us all over the world, finding classic treasures and discovering hidden gems of today, in a programme in which various projects reveal very interesting perspectives that make us reflect on the interconnection of music and peoples. We travel between Anatolia, Italy and Greece, continue with classics from Azerbaijan and North American blues, before ending by discovering music now vibrating in Malawi.

Dos proyectos musicales totalmente independientes han llegado casi a la vez a nuestras manos, oídos y conocimiento, revelando muy interesantes conexiones. Se trata, en ambos casos, de músicas de las comunidades judías de Ucrania, consideradas perdidas y felizmente recuperadas después, gracias a la labor de los profesionales de la Biblioteca Nacional Vernadsky de Ucrania. Son, por un lado, las canciones recogidas en 1944 entre los supervivientes del horror nazi, en la segunda entrega del proyecto Yiddish Glory, y, por otro, músicas recolectadas entre 1912 y 1914 que vuelven a cobrar vida en la interpretación de Angelo Baselli en el clarinete y Gianluca Casadei en el acordeón. Sones que nos hacen reflexionar acerca de lo valioso que es recuperar y conservar cualquier fragmento de la música y de la vida de los pueblos, y de cómo el recuerdo de genocidios pasados nos debe poner alerta ante los que, desgraciadamente, aún se siguen produciendo.

Two completely independent musical projects have reached our hands, ears and awareness almost at the same time, revealing some very interesting connections. In both cases, they are music from the Jewish communities of Ukraine, considered lost and then happily recovered thanks to the work of the professionals at the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine. On the one hand, there are the songs collected in 1944 among the survivors of the nazi horror, in the second instalment of the Yiddish Glory project and, on the other, music gathered between 1912 and 1914 that comes back to life in the performance of Angelo Baselli on clarinet and Gianluca Casadei on accordion. Sounds that make us reflect on how valuable it is to recover and preserve any fragment of the music and life of peoples, and on how the memory of past genocides must alert us to those that, sadly, are still taking place.

Abrimos desde una Euskadi tropical 2.0 amenazada por el cambio climático, para seguir caribeños y cubanos, con la inminente presencia escénica de Buena Vista All Stars, anticipando también muy tentadores festivales que se avecinan, como el Jeonju Int’l Sori Festival de Corea; Sukiyaki Meets the World, en Japón, o Les Suds, à Arles, en Francia. En este último actuará, entre otros, Grégory Dargent, con quien conversamos en el Babel Music XP de Marsella, algunas de cuyas actuaciones seguimos evocando.

We open from a tropical Basque Country 2.0 threatened by climate change, to continue in Caribbean and Cuban mode, with the imminent stage presence of Buena Vista All Stars, also anticipating some very tempting festivals that are approaching, such as the Jeonju Int’l Sori Festival of Korea; Sukiyaki Meets the World, in Japan or Les Suds, à Arles, in France. At the latter, Grégory Dargent will perform, among others, with whom we spoke at Babel Music XP in Marseille, some of whose performances we continue to evoke.
