Rooted and exploratory sounds converge in this new and brilliant project that brings together artists from Africa and Europe, hailing from La Réunion, Burkina Faso and mainland France, which is released today in physical format through the Airfono label.

Hasta hace no muchas décadas era impensable que alguien pudiera escuchar en una vida entera música de todos los parajes que recorremos en tan solo una hora de Mundofonías. Bueno, en pleno siglo XXI mucha gente tampoco lo hace y la inmensa mayoría de los medios dan la espalda a esta maravillosa posibilidad que en este programa se hace real. Viajamos entre Brasil, Honduras, Argentina, Birmania, el Tíbet, Anatolia, los Países Bajos, Grecia y el norte de África, rindiendo tributo también al músico garifuna Aurelio Martínez, recientemente desaparecido, y a todas las víctimas del terremoto y la guerra de los pueblos de Birmania.

Until just a few decades ago, it was unthinkable that someone could hear music from all the places we explore in just one hour of Mundofonías in a single lifetime. Well, in the 21st century, many still don’t – and the vast majority of media outlets turn their backs on this marvellous possibility, which becomes real in this programme. We travel through Brazil, Honduras, Argentina, Burma, Tibet, Anatolia, the Netherlands, Greece, and North Africa, also paying tribute to the Garifuna musician Aurelio Martínez, recently departed, and to all the victims of the earthquake and war among the peoples of Burma.

Mauro Palmas & Giacomo Vardeu

Desde Cerdeña, dos generaciones de amantes y cultivadores de la música de su tierra se dan la mano: el veterano Mauro Palmas, a las cuerdas de su “liuto cantabile”, y el jovencísimo Giacomo Vardeu, estrujando el fuelle de su “organetto” (acordeón diatónico). Con la colaboración de las celebradas voces de Cuncordu e Tenore de Orosei, nos ofrecen un emocionante diálogo musical desde su disco “Sighida”, editado por Mare e Miniere.

From Sardinia, two generations of lovers and keepers of their homeland’s music come together: the veteran Mauro Palmas, on the strings of his “liuto cantabile”, and the very young Giacomo Vardeu, squeezing the bellows of his “organetto” (diatonic accordion). With the collaboration of the renowned voices of Cuncordu e Tenore de Orosei, they offer us a moving musical dialogue from their album “Sighida”, released by Mare e Miniere.

We enjoy the three favourite albums of April on Mundofonías, which bring us Ozan Baysal, from Turkey, Tatros Együttes, from Hungary, and the exiled Afghan musicians of the Fanoos Ensemble. Experimentados músicos de diversos bagajes y orígenes se encuentran en este proyecto que aúna diversas tradiciones, jazz y un espíritu musical aventurero. Son la acordeonista francesa Viviane Arnoux, el violinista quebequés François Michaud y el guitarrista senegalés Hervé Samb. A través del sello Buda Musique, nos entregan un disco de bonita música y bonito título: “La marche du bonheur” (‘La marcha de la felicidad’).

Experienced musicians from various backgrounds and origins come together in this project that blends different traditions, jazz, and an adventurous musical spirit. They are the French accordionist Viviane Arnoux, the Québécois violinist François Michaud, and the Senegalese guitarist Hervé Samb. Through the Buda Musique label, they bring us an album full of beautiful music and a beautiful title: “La marche du bonheur” (‘The happiness march’).

Dedicamos buena parte de la presente edición a nuestras #Mundofonews, con noticias de lo que acontecerá próximamente en los escenarios globales, lo que nos llevará por la Tallinn Music Week de Estonia, Budapest Ritmo, el ciclo LIMO y el Festival Folklores de Madrid, la MUM de Extremadura y la Atlantic Music Expo y el Kriol Jazz Festival de Cabo Verde. Suenan músicas de aires argentinos, colombianos, ibéricos, húngaros, polacos y persas. Contamos con las voces invitadas de Rubén Coll y José Luis Espejo, comisarios del ciclo LIMO de Madrid.

Por eso podemos disfrutar y emocionarnos con las músicas auténticas de las más variadas procedencias y culturas que siempre tratamos de mostrar en Mundofonías. En esta ocasión, nuevos discos nos llevan por sones húngaros, belgas, daneses, tártaros, finlandeses, noruegos, malteses, del África occidental con conexión australiana, del África oriental con conexión londinense y cubanos.

The music rooted in the traditions of the peoples, of the people, belongs to everyone, to anyone, because it arises from human experiences and emotions, which are universal, expressed through an infinite wealth of nuances and languages. That’s why we can enjoy and be moved by the genuine music from the most diverse origins and cultures, which we always strive to highlight in Mundofonías. Desde el Pacífico colombiano nos llega el buen arte de este grupo de jóvenes enamorados de sus raíces musicales. A los sones de sus cantos, la marimba de chonta y las percusiones de la tierra, nos mandan desde el título de este su primer disco, editado por Palenque Records, una orden que acatamos inmediatamente en cuanto empieza a sonar su música: “Bailen y gocen”.

From the Colombian Pacific comes the fine artistry of this group of young people in love with their musical roots. Accompanied by their chants, the marimba de chonta, and the local percussions, they send us, through the title of their debut album released by Palenque Records, a command we gladly obey as soon as their music begins to play: “Bailen y gocen” (“Dance and enjoy”).
