Ensemble Chakâm

“Les vents brûlants” (‘Los vientos ardientes’) es el primer y flamante disco, autoproducido, del Ensemble Chakâm. Pero estas tres artistas, de origen persa, palestino y francés, no son ningunas recién llegadas. En este álbum, sus raíces y las cuerdas de sus instrumentos, tar, kanún y viola da gamba, se abrazan y entrelazan.

“Les Vents Brûlants” (‘The Blazing Winds’) is the first and brand-new self-produced album by Ensemble Chakâm. But these three artists, of Persian, Palestinian and French origin, are far from newcomers. In this album, their roots and the strings of their instruments, the tar, qanun and viola da gamba, embrace and intertwine.

Descubrimos el proyecto Folk_ME para el estudio y análisis de las músicas populares húngaras y de las culturas del entorno, contando con la voz invitada de Miklós Both, director de la Hagyományok Háza (Casa de las Tradiciones) de Budapest. Él mismo nos explica esta iniciativa, presentando también varias muestras musicales de la misma. Completamos el programa con más producciones recientes que nos traen más ecos magiares desde diferentes perspectivas y con interesantes conexiones.

We discover the Folk_ME project for the study and analysis of Hungarian folk music and the surrounding cultures, featuring the guest voice of Miklós Both, director of the Hagyományok Háza (House of Traditions) in Budapest. He himself explains this initiative to us, also presenting several musical samples from it. We complete the program with more recent productions that bring us additional Magyar echoes from different perspectives and with interesting connections.

Desde el territorio más oriental de Sudamérica, el Nordeste brasileño, nos llega la música del Pernambuco Quartet, publicada por Ocora, el sello de nuestra emisora hermana Radio France, la radio pública estatal francesa. En este disco de debut nos desgranan un ramillete de estilos populares de ese fértil territorio musical.

From the easternmost region of South America, the Brazilian Nordeste, we receive the music of the Pernambuco Quartet, released by Ocora, the label of our sister station Radio France, the French state public radio. In this debut album, they offer us a bouquet of popular styles from that fertile musical territory.

Un programa lleno de novedades y activismo… Y de misterios resueltos, como el origen del nombre de Araceli Tzigane, que tiene que ver mucho con esta banda gitana rumana que nos trae su nueva música, la Fanfare Ciocărlia, la cual acaba de anunciar que cancela indefinidamente sus actuaciones en los Estados Unidos, debido a la situación de riesgo e incertidumbre a la que se exponen quienes entren en el país. La música nos mece y nos agita, con sones plácidos y también enérgicos, con los que viajamos por los Balcanes, Francia, Escocia, Noruega, Finlandia, Zimbabue, Canadá o Ucrania, entre otros parajes, incluyendo dos piezas musicales que también son una denuncia y una llamada a la acción, a cargo de los colectivos Daughters of Donbas y Artists for Action.

A show full of new releases and activism… and solved mysteries too, like the origin of Araceli Tzigane’s name, which has a lot to do with the Romanian Roma band Fanfare Ciocărlia, who’ve just announced they’re indefinitely cancelling their performances in the United States due to the risks and uncertainty faced by those entering the country. The music rocks us gently and shakes us hard, with both peaceful and powerful tunes that take us through the Balkans, France, Scotland, Norway, Finland, Zimbabwe, Canada and Ukraine, among other places, including two songs that are also a form of protest and a call to action, brought by the collectives Daughters of Donbas and Artists for Action.

Ukandanz

Un cuarteto de Lyon y un cantante de Adís Abeba: esa es la conexión franco-etíope que define a este grupo, Ukandanz, que conjuga elementos musicales etíopes y jazzísticos con actitud punk, meticulosidad progresiva y ramalazos heavies (versión de Black Sabbath incluida). En su nuevo trabajo “Evil plan” (‘Plan diabólico’) desarrollan sus más laberínticas intrigas musicales.

A quartet from Lyon and a singer from Addis Ababa: that is the French-Ethiopian connection that defines this band, Ukandanz, which blends Ethiopian and jazz musical elements with a punk attitude, progressive meticulousness, and heavy metal outbursts (including a Black Sabbath cover). In their new album “Evil plan”, they develop their most labyrinthine musical intrigues.

En estos días se publican dos discos fundamentales sobre el irresistible ritmo del tsapiky, originario del sudoeste de Madagascar, registrados allí in situ: el nuevo trabajo del guitarrista Damily y su Toliaria Tsapiky Band, con grabaciones realizadas durante la fihisa, la celebración fúnebre por la muerte de su madre, y el recopilatorio «Tsapiky! Modern music from southwest Madagascar«, que verá la luz a primeros de mayo. Echamos mano también de otros dos recopilatorios esenciales anteriores, como son «Tsapiky, panorama d’une jeune musique de Tuléar» y «Tulear never sleeps: Tsapiky guitars from South West Madagascar«, así como de la música de los franceses Electric Vocuhila, imbuidos de esta sonoridad. Son grabaciones que nos permitirán profundizar en este indómito estilo que se adapta a las más variadas instrumentaciones: guitarras eléctricas y acústicas, acordeones, flautas, fanfarrias…

These days, two essential albums are being released featuring the irresistible rhythm of tsapiky, originally from the southwest of Madagascar, recorded on site: the new work by guitarist Damily and his Toliara Tsapiky Band, with recordings made during the fihisa, the funeral celebration for his mother’s passing, and the compilation “Tsapiky! Modern Music from Southwest Madagascar”, which will be released in early May. We also revisit two previous essential compilations: “Tsapiky, Panorama d’une Jeune Musique de Tuléar” and “Tulear Never Sleeps: Tsapiky Guitars from South West Madagascar”, as well as music by the French group Electric Vocuhila, steeped in this sound. These recordings allow us to delve deeper into this indomitable style that adapts to the most varied instrumentations: electric and acoustic guitars, accordions, flutes, brass bands…

Desde el conocimiento y el amor por sus raíces, el grupo Tatros, Tatros Együttes, sale en busca de las sonoridades más ancestrales de la cultura húngara que se han conservado en las comunidades csango de las actuales Rumanía y Moldavía. El resultado nos lo brindan en este espléndido disco autopublicado: “Pillanat” (‘Momento’).

From the knowledge and love for their roots, the group Tatros, Tatros Együttes, seeks out the most ancestral sounds of Hungarian culture that have been preserved within the Csango communities of present-day Romania and Moldova. The result is offered to us in this splendid self-released album: “Pillanat” (‘Moment’).
