Trazamos un triángulo por donde las músicas discurren libres en su expresión y en sus deseos de emancipación. Viajamos desde Italia a América Latina, tomando tierra en Argentina, Chile y Colombia, con conexiones cubanas, puertorriqueñas e ibéricas, para desembocar en el África Occidental, con los continuadores del secular legado mandinga.

We trace a triangle through which music flows freely in its expression and its desire for emancipation. We travel from Italy to Latin America, landing in Argentina, Chile, and Colombia, with Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Iberian connections, to finally arrive in West Africa, with the heirs of the centuries-old Mandinga legacy.

Pacha Wakay Munan

Los componentes de este dúo peruano, Pacha Wakay Munan, nos proponen un diálogo entre tradición y experimentación, sacando de detrás de las vitrinas de los museos instrumentos musicales prehispánicos para darles vida de nuevo como herramientas creativas contemporáneas. Su disco “El tiempo quiere cantar” acaba de ser publicado por el inquieto sello limeño Buh Records.

The members of this Peruvian duo, Pacha Wakay Munan, propose a dialogue between tradition and experimentation, bringing pre-Hispanic musical instruments out from behind museum display cases to breathe new life into them as contemporary creative tools. Their album «El tiempo quiere cantar» (‘Time wants to sing’) has just been released by the ever-adventurous Lima-based label Buh Records.

Viajamos por todo el orbe e incluso escuchamos música de otros planetas imaginarios (¿o no?), con nuevos e interesantes discos que llegan hasta nuestras manos y oídos, y que nos hacen viajar por las cumbres de los Andes, entre las comunidades indígenas norteamericanas, con un encuentro galáctico-japonés, haciendo diversas escalas en África (Lesoto, Níger y La Reunión), pasando después por Anatolia, Persia, los países nórdicos y Gran Bretaña.

We travel across the globe and even listen to music from other imaginary planets (or not?), with new and fascinating albums reaching our hands and ears, taking us through the peaks of the Andes, among Native North American communities, with a galactic-Japanese encounter, making various stops in Africa (Lesotho, Niger and Réunion), then moving through Anatolia, Persia, the Nordic countries and Great Britain.

From the two ends of the Mediterranean, Catalonia and Syria, clarinetist Oriol Marès and ud player Talal Fayad, together with the musicians completing their quartet, present this album, “Estuarium”, in which they guide us through a journey of evocative Eastern and jazz-inspired sounds.

Exploramos músicas que nacen de las tradiciones y las experimentaciones a partir de ellas, que nos revelan una enorme riqueza y diversidad por tierras de la Europa occidental, oculta habitualmente bajo el ruido de la uniformización. Viajamos por Cerdeña, la región de las Cuatro Provincias en Italia, Bretaña, Flandes, Auvernia, Provenza, Languedoc y el Mazizo Central francés, donde nos encontramos una inesperada conexión con Benín, en el África occidental.

We explore music that springs from traditions and from experimentation rooted in them, revealing a vast richness and diversity throughout the lands of Western Europe, usually hidden beneath the noise of uniformity. We travel through Sardinia, the region of the Quattro Province in Italy, Brittany, Flanders, Auvergne, Provence, Languedoc, and the French Massif Central, where we find an unexpected connection with Benin, in West Africa.

The label Sublime Frequencies enchants us once again. This time, with the compilation dedicated to the vibrant rhythm of tsapiky from the southwest of Madagascar that we present, made up of field recordings by the French musician Maxime Bobo, an enthusiast and expert of this style.

Abrimos con los tres favoritos de Mundofonías de mayo del 2025: los nuevos trabajos de Thanos Stavridis & Drom, desde Grecia; de Mara Aranda, indagando en las tradiciones sefardíes de Bulgaria, y el recopilatorio Tsapiky! Modern music from southwest Madagascar. Continuamos con sonoridades principalmente arábigas, con grabaciones añejas ahora republicadas y otras de reciente factura, que nos llevan por Egipto, Líbano y Siria, con conexiones libias y canadienses, para terminar con un encuentro occitano-magrebí.

We open with the three Mundofonías favorites for May 2025: the new albums by Thanos Stavridis & Drom, from Greece, by Mara Aranda, exploring the Sephardic traditions of Bulgaria, and the compilation “Tsapiky! Modern music from southwest Madagascar.” We continue with predominantly Arab sounds, with vintage recordings now reissued and others freshly crafted, taking us through Egypt, Lebanon and Syria, with Libyan and Canadian connections, and ending with an Occitan-Maghrebi encounter.

We adorn ourselves with splendid Arabic musical jewels, some newly crafted, like the music of the Cairo-based project The Handover, and others set into the grooves of classic recordings brought back to light, such as a brilliant live performance by the great singer Warda, among other sonic gems offered by labels such as Wewantsounds, Sublime Frequencies and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.

Adrian Raso & Fanfare Ciocărlia

Más de una década después de su primera colaboración, el guitarrista canadiense Adrian Raso vuelve a unir fuerzas con este torbellino de la naturaleza que es la Fanfare Ciocărlia, en un trabajo que ve la luz en estos primeros días de mayo: “The devil rides again” (‘El diablo cabalga de nuevo’). Lo publica el sello Asphalt Tango Records, que tomó su nombre de una de las legendarias piezas de esta célebre fanfarria gitana rumana.

More than a decade after their first collaboration, the Canadian guitarist Adrian Raso joins forces again with that whirlwind of nature that is Fanfare Ciocărlia, in a album released in these early days of May: “The devil rides again”. It is published by the label Asphalt Tango Records, which took its name from one of the legendary pieces by this renowned Romanian Gypsy brass band.
