We open with Mundofonías’ three favourite albums in July 2026, with fine flamenco from Raúl Cantizano & Sebastián Cruz, the captivating artistry of Japanese artist Remon Nakanishi and the Italian-Balkan connections of the Nubras Ensemble. Dos proyectos musicales totalmente independientes han llegado casi a la vez a nuestras manos, oídos y conocimiento, revelando muy interesantes conexiones. Se trata, en ambos casos, de músicas de las comunidades judías de Ucrania, consideradas perdidas y felizmente recuperadas después, gracias a la labor de los profesionales de la Biblioteca Nacional Vernadsky de Ucrania. Son, por un lado, las canciones recogidas en 1944 entre los supervivientes del horror nazi, en la segunda entrega del proyecto Yiddish Glory, y, por otro, músicas recolectadas entre 1912 y 1914 que vuelven a cobrar vida en la interpretación de Angelo Baselli en el clarinete y Gianluca Casadei en el acordeón. Sones que nos hacen reflexionar acerca de lo valioso que es recuperar y conservar cualquier fragmento de la música y de la vida de los pueblos, y de cómo el recuerdo de genocidios pasados nos debe poner alerta ante los que, desgraciadamente, aún se siguen produciendo.

Two completely independent musical projects have reached our hands, ears and awareness almost at the same time, revealing some very interesting connections. In both cases, they are music from the Jewish communities of Ukraine, considered lost and then happily recovered thanks to the work of the professionals at the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine. On the one hand, there are the songs collected in 1944 among the survivors of the nazi horror, in the second instalment of the Yiddish Glory project and, on the other, music gathered between 1912 and 1914 that comes back to life in the performance of Angelo Baselli on clarinet and Gianluca Casadei on accordion. Sounds that make us reflect on how valuable it is to recover and preserve any fragment of the music and life of peoples, and on how the memory of past genocides must alert us to those that, sadly, are still taking place.

Abrimos desde una Euskadi tropical 2.0 amenazada por el cambio climático, para seguir caribeños y cubanos, con la inminente presencia escénica de Buena Vista All Stars, anticipando también muy tentadores festivales que se avecinan, como el Jeonju Int’l Sori Festival de Corea; Sukiyaki Meets the World, en Japón, o Les Suds, à Arles, en Francia. En este último actuará, entre otros, Grégory Dargent, con quien conversamos en el Babel Music XP de Marsella, algunas de cuyas actuaciones seguimos evocando.

We open from a tropical Basque Country 2.0 threatened by climate change, to continue in Caribbean and Cuban mode, with the imminent stage presence of Buena Vista All Stars, also anticipating some very tempting festivals that are approaching, such as the Jeonju Int’l Sori Festival of Korea; Sukiyaki Meets the World, in Japan or Les Suds, à Arles, in France. At the latter, Grégory Dargent will perform, among others, with whom we spoke at Babel Music XP in Marseille, some of whose performances we continue to evoke.

A free overview of this month’s Transglobal World Music Chart, compiled through the voting of a panel of world music specialists from all continents, of which the makers of Mundofonías are co-creators and co-promoters. Imbued with Afro-American sounds, from the Caribbean to New Orleans, also with touches of ethio-jazz, Balkan sounds and other ingredients, this brass band from the French city of Angers, Big Joanna, lets us savour the sonic delights that resound in its eponymous debut album.

Suena bluegrass norteamericano, tango argentino, viejos cantos sicilianos reprocesados, conexiones entre Apulia y el Magreb, el gamelán de Bali explorando nuevos territorios, bailes retro a la mexicana o electrocumbiones planetarios a la colombiana.

We enjoy rooted sounds that, at the same time, venture out in search of new encounters and inspirations. We hear North American bluegrass, Argentine tango, old Sicilian songs reprocessed, connections between Apulia and the Maghreb, the gamelan of Bali exploring new territories, retro dances alla mexicana and planetary electrocumbiones in Colombian style.

Seguimos el periplo de este artista ghanés trasladado a Bélgica, Nana Osei Twum Barima, cantor y tañedor del arpa-laúd seperewa, quien nos presenta su primer disco en solitario, “Journey to the unknown” (‘Viaje a lo desconocido’). En él retrata delicadamente la incertidumbre de la vida del emigrante, así como el amor tanto a su legado y al lugar de donde viene, como también a su tierra de adopción.

We follow the journey of this Ghanaian artist based in Belgium, Nana Osei Twum Barima, singer and player of the seperewa harp-lute, who presents his first solo album, “Journey to the Unknown”. In it, he delicately portrays the uncertainty of the life of the emigrant, as well as love both for his heritage and the place he comes from and for his adopted land.

Hacemos un pequeño collage de piezas musicales que no han cabido finalmente en programas anteriores y también anticipamos, comentamos y recomendamos algunos interesantes festivales y ciclos que nos esperan próximamente en estas fechas veraniegas, como Etnosur y La Mar de Músicas y, más allá de nuestras fronteras, el ciclo Klangkosmos, en Alemania; el Premio Loano per la Musica Tradizionale Italiana; el festival Nuits d’Afrique, en Montreal, Canadá, o el Festival Músicas do Mundo de Sines, en Portugal. Mientras, nos dejamos seducir por recuerdos griegos que nos descubren reveladores nexos, sentidos cantos kurdos, conexiones perso-africanas, algo de bluegrass y folk inglés de altura, experimentos italianos, un puente de Bamako al Misisipi, seguido de más sonoridades afrooccidentales, para terminar con laúdes palestinos y una llamada al cese de las guerras y del sufrimiento de los pueblos.

We make a small collage of musical pieces that ultimately did not fit into previous programmes, and we also look ahead to some interesting festivals and series awaiting us soon in these summer days, such as Etnosur and La Mar de Músicas here in our lands and, beyond our borders, the Klangkosmos series in Germany; the Premio Città di Loano per la Musica Tradizionale Italiana; the Nuits d’Afrique festival in Montréal, Canada or the Festival Músicas do Mundo de Sines in Portugal. Meanwhile, we let ourselves be seduced by Greek memories that reveal illuminating connections, heartfelt Kurdish songs, Persian-African connections, a touch of bluegrass and outstanding English folk, Italian experiments, a bridge from Bamako to the Mississippi, followed by more West African sounds, before ending with Palestinian lutes and a call for an end to wars and to the suffering of peoples.
