Söndörgő

El vituoso y versátil conjunto húngaro Söndörgő nos ofrece un nuevo trabajo en el que navega entre influencias balcánicas, húngaras y jazzísticas. Su título, “Gyezz”, es una adaptación de la voz “jazz” a la ortografía magiar, lo que no es gratuito, porque además cuentan para la ocasión con la complicidad de un renombrado “jazzman”: el saxofonista norteamericano Chris Potter. Es una edición del sello GroundUp Music.

The virtuosic and versatile Hungarian ensemble Söndörgő presents a new work that navigates between Balkan, Hungarian, and jazz influences. Its title, “Gyezz,” is an adaptation of the word “jazz” to Magyar orthography, which is no coincidence, as they have enlisted the collaboration of a renowned jazzman for the occasion: US American saxophonist Chris Potter. This album is released under the GroundUp Music label.

Sväng

Sväng es un cuarteto de armónicas finlandés que está de celebración: veinte años de actividad y diez discos, con este “Svängo nuevo”, editado por Galileo Music. El título ya nos muestra su debilidad por el tango, género muy popular en Finlandia, pero también se inclinan por sonoridades balcánicas y las músicas populares de su tierra, entre otras, todo ello llevado al terreno de sus llamativas armónicas de diferentes tamaños.

Sväng is a Finnish harmonica quartet that is celebrating twenty years of activity and ten albums, with this “Svängo nuevo”, released by Galileo Music. The title already reflects their fondness for tango, a genre very popular in Finland, but they also explore Balkan sounds and the folk music of their homeland, among others, all interpreted through their striking harmonicas of various sizes.

Year-end patches

Cerramos el 2024 abriendo un programa tenderete lleno de retales sonoros para hacer tiempo ante la falta de tiempo, con piezas musicales seleccionadas para anteriores programas, pero que se quedaron fuera en su momento. Escuchamos más grabaciones inéditas realizadas el pasado octubre en el WOMEX de Mánchester, viajamos de nuevo al Congreso de la Música Árabe de El Cairo de 1932 y disfrutamos con otros sabrosos retales recuperados que nos traen danzas brasileñas, añejo son cubano, experimentaciones extremoorientales y afroañoranzas desde Mali y el Congo.

We close 2024 opening a patchwork-style program filled with sonic scraps to make the most of time when there isn’t enough of it, featuring musical pieces selected for previous episodes that didn’t make it in the past. We listen to more unpublished recordings from last October at WOMEX in Manchester, journey once again to the 1932 Congress of Arabic Music in Cairo, and enjoy other delightful scraps that bring us Brazilian dances, vintage Cuban son, experimental sounds from the Far East, and Afro-nostalgic tunes from Mali and Congo.

Los discos valorados para elaborar esta lista son los trabajos completos y originales recibidos durante el año (o finales del año anterior), sin importar dónde ni por quién hayan sido editados o el tipo de distribución que tengan.

This list showcases Mundofonías’ favorite albums of 2024, presented in a random order. Our selection is non-hierarchical and unnumbered, encompassing those recordings that have been more interesting for us and have given us more pleasure during this year. It’s a completely independent, non-commercial list, not subject to any other consideration than the criteria of the hosts of Mundofonías, solely focusing on the quality and interest of the albums. The albums evaluated to prepare this list are the original ones received in their complete version during this year (or at the end of the previous year), irrespective of where or by whom they have been published or their mode of distribution.

En el camino, pasamos también por la Luisiana, Colombia, México, Cuba y Brasil, entre otros sonoros destinos, con conexiones neoryorquinas, londinenses, berlinesas y checas.

We journey through the Americas, from Canada to Argentina, to enjoy recent musical productions that bring us the essence and experimentation born from their diverse roots. Along the way, we also pass through Louisiana, Colombia, Mexico, Cuba and Brazil, among other resonant destinations, with connections to New York, London, Berlin, and Czechia.

Polyphème: Wassim Halal & Gamelan Puspawarna

“Le rêve de Polyphème” (‘El sueño de Polifemo’) es un disco que nos descubre músicas nunca antes escuchadas, revelándonos que todavía hay lugar para la sorpresa. En él, la darbuka del franco-libanés Wassim Halal se encuentra y se enreda con los intrincados y fascinantes ciclos rítmicos y melódicos del gamelán de Bali, impulsados por el Gamelan Puspawarna. Es el proyecto Polyphème, que cobra vida discográfica a través del indómito sello Pagans.

“Le rêve de Polyphème” (‘The dream of Polyphemus’) is an album that unveils music never heard before, revealing that there is still room for surprise. In it, the darbuka of Franco-Lebanese Wassim Halal meets and intertwines with the intricate and fascinating rhythmic and melodic cycles of the gamelan of Bali, driven by the Gamelan Puspawarna. This is the Polyphème project, brought to life on record through the untamed Pagans label.

Hacemos nuestro el título esperanzado de uno de los discos que estrenamos en este programa, en el que terribles situaciones que vive este mundo y sus gentes, presentes y pasadas, inevitablemente nos salen al paso del mero disfrute de la música. Suenan músicas de los gitanos de Hungría, de los pueblos sami y carelio desde Finlandia, de Italia, Córcega, Palestina, Francia, Canadá, Ghana, Bioko, España o Grecia.

We take as our own the hopeful title of one of the albums premiered in this program, where the terrible situations experienced by this world and its people, both past and present, inevitably confront us on the path of merely enjoying the music. Music is heard from the Roma of Hungary, the Sami and Karelian peoples from Finland, from Italy, Corsica, Palestine, France, Canada, Ghana, Bioko, Spain and Greece.
