Viajamos por Bosnia y el resto de los Balcanes, por Camerún, China, Tuvá, Ecuador, Burkina Faso, Zimbabue, Marruecos, Vietnam, Norteamérica y Malawi, para terminar en Egipto, con el número uno firmado por Mustafa Said & Asil Ensemble.

Free overview of this month’s Transglobal World Music Chart, created through the voting of a panel of world music disseminators from all continents, of which the makers of Mundofonías are co-creators and co-promoters. Comenzamos en Brasil, con músicas desde la raíz que nos traen diversas conexiones, como la India. Continuamos con entrelazamientos entre el flamenco, el norte de África, Oriente Próximo y el jazz. Recorremos después Europa, viajando por Bulgaria, Galicia y Francia, para terminar enlazando África Occidental con Escandinavia y Norteamérica.

We begin in Brazil, with music from the roots that brings us diverse connections, such as India. We continue with intertwinings between flamenco, North Africa, the Middle East and jazz. We then travel across Europe, journeying through Bulgaria, Galicia and France, to end by linking West Africa with Scandinavia and North America.

One of the great virtuosos of the Brazilian pandeiro, Sergio Krakowski, offers us an appealing assortment of experimentations rooted in his Afro-Brazilian heritage in this album, “Boca do tempo”, where his instrument interacts with chants and electronics.

Viajamos entre la Occitania italiana, Portugal, el Canadá francófono, el corazón tuvano de Asia, la Bosnia serbófona, la Rusia profunda, el Mediterráneo mestizo de Cataluña, Valencia y Córcega, o el África más palpitante, desde Camerún y Nigeria.

We travel the world with music of the most diverse origins and treatments: from popular music collected directly in the communities that practice it, to interweavings with folk, jazz, flamenco, or afrobeat tonalities. We journey through Italian Occitania, Portugal, French-speaking Canada, the Tuvan heart of Asia, Serbian-speaking Bosnia, deep Russia, the blended Mediterranean of Catalonia, Valencia, and Corsica, or the most vibrant Africa, from Cameroon and Nigeria.

Gennadi Tumat

Desde el corazón de Asia, desde Tuvá, administrativamente en la Federación Rusa, pero muy cercana musicalmente a la vecina Mongolia, nos llegan estas deslumbrantes grabaciones de finales del siglo pasado, recogidas por el sello PAN Records. En ellas escuchamos a Gennadi Tumat con su grupo Ay Kherel, una de las más reconocidas voces del canto difónico khöömei, quien nos dejó demasiado pronto.

From the heart of Asia, from Tuva, administratively part of the Russian Federation, but musically very close to neighboring Mongolia, come these dazzling recordings from the end of the last century, released by the label PAN Records. In them we hear Gennadi Tumat with his group Ay Kherel, one of the most renowned voices of the khöömei overtone singing, who left us far too soon.

Stefano Saletti

El músico italiano Stefano Saletti, compositor y tañedor de muy variadas cuerdas, nos ofrece un disco de título revelador, “Mediterranima”, cantado en la antigua y mestiza lengua sabir, en la que se entendían navegantes, marineros, comerciantes y piratas en los puertos y aguas del Mediterráneo. Diferentes y estupendas voces femeninas, una por canción, y destacados instrumentistas le acompañan en este álbum publicado por Materiali Sonori.

The Italian musician Stefano Saletti, composer and player of a wide variety of string instruments, offers us an album with a revealing title, “Mediterranima”, sung in the ancient and mixed language sabir, which was used for communication among sailors, seafarers, merchants and pirates in the ports and waters of the Mediterranean. Different and outstanding female voices, one per song, and prominent instrumentalists accompany him on this album released by Materiali Sonori.

LIMúR and other novelties

Repasamos la LIMúR, Lista Ibérica de Músicas de Raíz del segundo trimestre del 2025, una iniciativa que lanzamos desde Mundofonías y en la que participan especialistas y divulgadores de diversos países. Suenen músicas que conectan Portugal, el País Vasco, Cataluña o el País Valenciano con Siria, Irlanda, Italia, Francia y otros parajes orientales. Escuchamos más novedades ibéricas desde Asturias y Portugal, para terminar con influencias balcánicas desde Francia e inspiraciones bluegrass desde Alemania.

We review the LIMúR, the Iberian Roots Music Chart for the second quarter of 2025, an initiative launched by Mundofonías with the participation of specialists and music disseminators from various countries. We listen to music that connects Portugal, the Basque Country, Catalonia and the Valencian Country with Syria, Ireland, Italy, France and other eastern landscapes. We hear more Iberian new releases from Asturias and Portugal, finishing with Balkan influences from France and bluegrass inspirations from Germany.

L’Attirail

La inclasificable banda francesa L’Attirail nos ofrece un nuevo trabajo en el que recorre su inabarcable catálogo de sonoridades exóticas y evocadoras: “Cher revenants”, algo así como ‘queridos aparecidos o resucitados’. Aquí reúnen piezas descartadas en anteriores trabajos, circunstancia “inexplicable” sobre la que, afirman, hay una investigación en curso.

The unclassifiable French band L’Attirail presents us with a new work in which they revisit their vast catalogue of exotic and evocative sounds: “Cher revenants”, something like ‘dear ghosts or resurrected ones’. Here they gather tracks previously discarded from earlier works, a circumstance they describe as “inexplicable” and about which, they claim, an investigation is currently underway.

Aprovechando su paso por España, charlamos con el músico argentino Chango Spasiuk sobre el proyecto «Taco y suela» que ha venido a presentar por tierras europeas y muchas más reflexiones sobre la música, el chamamé y la vida. El programa se completa con otras novedades de aires tropicales con conexiones japonesas, franco-catalanas y norteamericanas.

While in Spain, we talked with the Argentine musician Chango Spasiuk about the project “Taco y suela”, which he came to present across Europe, and many more reflections on music, chamamé and life. The show is completed with other new releases with tropical vibes and Japanese, French-Catalan and North American connections.
