Recordamos dos importantes citas musicales en las que el equipo de Mundofonías estuvo presente: Budapest Ritmo, en la capital húngara, y MUM: Jornadas Profesionales de la Música de Extremadura, en Mérida. Evocamos músicas que disfrutamos en dichos eventos, con resonancias húngaras, balcánicas, belgas, cubanas, portuguesas y globales. Traemos también las conversaciones que sostuvimos en Budapest con Salvador Repilado Labrada, hijo de Compay Segundo e impulsor del grupo que sostiene su legado, y con Veronika Varga.

We revisit two important musical events at which the Mundofonías team was present: Budapest Ritmo, in the Hungarian capital, and MUM: Jornadas Profesionales de la Música de Extremadura, in Mérida. We evoke music that we enjoyed at those events, with Hungarian, Balkan, Belgian, Cuban, Portuguese and global resonances. We also bring the conversations we held in Budapest with Salvador Repilado Labrada, son of Compay Segundo and promoter of the group that keeps his legacy alive, and with Veronika Varga.

Jean-Luc Thomas, flautista bretón, polifacético y multiproyecto, nos presenta ahora su cuarteto, el Jean-Luc Thomas Quartet, con el que acaba de publicar el disco “Sillons” (‘Surcos’). En él rastreamos las muchas influencias y sapiencias que ha ido acumulando en sus aventuras musicales, desde su propia tierra a otras vecinas en Francia y las islas británicas, o más lejanas en Brasil, África Occidental o la India.

Jean-Luc Thomas a versatile Breton flautist involved in multiple projects, now presents his quartet, the Jean-Luc Thomas Quartet, with which he has just released the album “Sillons” (‘Furrows’). In it, we trace the many influences and forms of knowledge he has gathered throughout his musical adventures, from his own land to neighbouring regions in France and the British Isles, or further afield in Brazil, West Africa and India.

Repasamos los tres discos favoritos de Mundofonías de mayo del 2026, con Claire Vine, desde el País de Gales, el recopilatorio “Aman aman: Greek-Anatolian laments”, y el dúo franco-iraní Hamraaz. Continuamos mirando hacia el Mediterráneo oriental y más al este, con aires afganos, del Próximo Oriente y griegos en conexión suiza, neoyorquina y barcelonesa, para terminar precisamente por tierras ibéricas, entre aires flamencos y raíces cántabras.

We review the three favourite albums of Mundofonías for May 2026, with Claire Vine from Wales, the compilation “Aman Aman: Greek-Anatolian Laments”, and the French-Iranian duo Hamraaz. We continue looking towards the eastern Mediterranean and further eastwards, with Afghan, Middle Eastern and Greek flavours in Swiss, New York and Barcelona connections, to end precisely in Iberian lands, between flamenco airs and Cantabrian roots.

Darol Anger

El veterano y referencial violinista estadounidense Darol Anger nos brinda un generoso trabajo musical repleto de colaboraciones. Se trata de “Diary of a Fiddler #2: The empty nest” (‘Diario de un violinista 2: El nido vacío’), secuela del disco número uno con ese título, grabado en 1999. Quien estuvo en los orígenes de formaciones imprescindibles, como el David Grisman Quintet o el Turtle Island Street Quartet, vuelve a sentar cátedra como maestro de los estilos populares norteamericanos.

The veteran and highly influential US violinist Darol Anger offers us a generous musical work filled with collaborations. It is “Diary of a Fiddler #2: The Empty Nest”, the sequel to the first album with that title, recorded in 1999. Having been at the origins of essential ensembles such as the David Grisman Quintet and the Turtle Island String Quartet, he once again sets the standard as a master of North American popular styles.

Este programa tiene forma de bocadillo con relleno klezmer. Ah, pero antes del bocadillo, va un aperitivo anglo-francés. Y no falta el vermú. Y es que en nuestras #Mundofonews traemos noticias de próximos conciertos y festivales que repasamos en dos tandas, al principio y al final del programa. Hablamos de propuestas de balfolk y del festival Folklores en Madrid, destacando la celebración del 40.º aniversario de La Musgaña. Comentamos y escuchamos músicas del ciclo Klangkosmos de Alemania, el Offest de Skopie y el Festival de Arte Flamenco de Catalunya, viajando entre Francia, España, Suecia, Inglaterra, Ucrania, Canadá, Colombia y Mozambique.

This programme takes the shape of a sandwich with a klezmer filling. Ah, but before the sandwich comes an Anglo-French appetiser. And the vermouth is not missing either. On our #Mundofonews we bring news of upcoming concerts and festivals, which we review in two rounds, at the beginning and at the end of the programme. We talk about balfolk proposals and the Folklores festival in Madrid, highlighting the celebration of the 40th anniversary of La Musgaña. Procedentes de tierras ibéricas, españolas, catalanas, por un lado, y balcánicas, serbias, por otro, estos dos inquietos, solventes y creativos artistas se han juntado en Viena para dar rienda suelta a su complicidad musical y entremezclar sus múltiples influencias. Se trata del clarinetista Òscar Antolí y el acordeonista Miloš Todorovski, quienes nos presentan su segundo disco: “Resonances”.

Coming from Iberian, Spanish and Catalan lands, on the one hand, and Balkan and Serbian on the other, these two restless, skilled and creative artists met in Vienna to give free rein to their musical complicity and blend their many influences. They are the clarinetist Òscar Antolí and the accordionist Miloš Todorovski, who present their second album: “Resonances”.

Delicias persas y árabes

Aunque muchas aerolíneas racaneen con estas cosas, en este vuelo musical no escatimamos en delicias persas y árabes para degustar. Escuchamos, en discos recién publicados o que verán la luz próximamente, voces e instrumentistas persas desde la diáspora y el exilio en diversos países de Europa y América, para rematar con tres tañedores de ud con raíces sirias y argelinas.

Although many airlines cut corners on such things, on this musical flight we spare no expense when it comes to Persian and Arab delights. We listen, in newly released albums or ones soon to be unveiled, to Persian voices and instrumentalists from the diaspora and exile across various countries in Europe and America, before concluding with three players of the oud with Syrian and Algerian roots.
