Comenzamos con los tres discos favoritos de Mundofonías de enero del 2026, que vienen firmados por los mexicanos Los Originarios del Plan, desde California, el flautista indio Ravi Kulur junto con el chelista norteamericano Barry Phillips y el grupo francés La Cuivraille. Continuamos con músicas que nos llegan desde Serbia, con sones valacos y gitanos, y del sur de Italia, para terminar en el África Occidental, con más novedades discográficas y sonidos llegados desde Malí, Senegal y Ghana, con conexiones alemanas y norteamericanas.

We begin with the three favourite albums of Mundofonías for January 2026, signed by the Mexican group Los Originarios del Plan, from California, the Indian flautist Ravi Kulur together with the American cellist Barry Phillips, and the French group La Cuivraille. We continue with music arriving from Serbia, with Vlach and Gypsy sounds, and from the south of Italy, to finish in West Africa, with more new releases and sounds coming from Mali, Senegal and Ghana, with German and North American connections.

El codiciado ámbar viajaba en el mundo antiguo desde el Báltico al Mediterráneo, a través de ríos y tierras de la Europa central y oriental. Hacemos el mismo viaje, con algún escarceo a territorios cercanos, iniciándolo en una escondida isla en Estonia de ancestral cultura sueca, dando un rodeo por Noruega y Dinamarca, para seguir por Polonia, Hungría, Rumanía y desembocar en la isla de Chipre, disfrutando de ediciones discográficas de reciente publicación.

In the ancient world, the coveted amber travelled from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, through rivers and lands of Central and Eastern Europe. We make the same journey, with some detours into nearby territories, beginning on a hidden island in Estonia with an ancestral Swedish culture, taking a roundabout route through Norway and Denmark, then continuing through Poland, Hungary and Romania, and finally reaching the island of Cyprus, enjoying recently released recordings.

Guitari Baro

Guitari Baro quiere decir ‘conversaciones de guitarra’, en referencia al diálogo musical que entablan sendos tañedores de este instrumento, Gaoussou Kouyaté y Kerfala Diabaté, desde Guinea y Mali. A este animado coloquio musical se une también el balafonista maliense Lassana Diabaté.

Guitari Baro means “guitar conversations,” referring to the musical dialogue established by two players of this instrument, Gaoussou Kouyaté and Kerfala Diabaté, from Guinea and Mali. This lively musical exchange is also joined by the Malian balafon player Lassana Diabaté.

Afroamerindia

Exploramos rutas y conexiones por las músicas del planeta, que nos hacen partir de África, de Costa de Marfil, encontrando rápidamente enlaces con América Latina, entre el Congo y Colombia, para continuar con músicas indoamericanas en Surinam. Continuamos en clave india, con una brillante grabación histórica, para terminar con aires anatolios resonando en Bélgica. Todo ello con grabaciones recién publicadas o que lo harán próximamente.

We explore routes and connections across the music of the planet, leading us to start in Africa, in Ivory Coast, quickly finding links with Latin America, between Congo and Colombia, then moving on to Indo-American music in Suriname. We continue in an Indian vein with a brilliant historical recording, and finish with Anatolian flavours resonating in Belgium. All of this through recordings that have just been released or will be published soon.

El virtuoso turco del laúd baglamá Ozan Baysal nos presenta su primer trabajo como solista titulado “Tel ve ten” (‘Piel y cuerda’), publicado por ARC Music, en el que despliega su maestría en la técnica llamada “şelpe”. Esta consiste en tañer el instrumento sin la ayuda de un plectro y de diferentes maneras, como ese antecedente del “tapping” de los modernos héroes de la guitarra eléctrica, el “parmak vurma”.

The Turkish virtuoso of the bağlama lute Ozan Baysal presents his first solo work, titled “Tel ve ten” (‘Skin and string’), released by ARC Music, in which he displays his mastery of the technique known as “şelpe”. This consists of playing the instrument without the aid of a plectrum and in different ways, such as that precursor of the “tapping” used by modern electric guitar heroes, “parmak vurma”.

Indias por el mundo
Indias around the world

Una diáspora no muy conocida en lo musical es la proveniente del subcontinente indio. Sin embargo, poblaciones de ese origen que se han asentado en lugares muy distantes han generado expresiones musicales singulares, como las que apreciamos con ejemplos musicales llegados desde Surinam, la isla caribeña de Trinidad o la africana de Mauricio. Completamos con más grabaciones de raíz india, tanto históricas como bien recientes, registradas en Pakistán y Gran Bretaña.

One not very well-known musical diaspora is that originating from the Indian subcontinent. However, populations of that origin that have settled in very distant places have generated distinctive musical expressions, such as those we hear in musical examples from Suriname, the Caribbean island of Trinidad or the African island of Mauritius. We round off with more recordings of Indian roots, both historical and very recent, recorded in Pakistan and Great Britain.

Exploramos sones ibéricos, caribeños, argentinos, afrooccidentales y etíopes, para rematar con el número 1, el proyecto indonesio-neerlandés Nusantara Beat. ¡Feliz año nuevo!

Our loose overview of this month’s Transglobal World Music Chart, created through the voting of a panel of world music disseminators from all continents, of which the makers of Mundofonías are co-creators and co-promoters. We explore Iberian, Caribbean, Argentine, West African and Ethiopian sounds, and wrap up with the number 1, the Indonesian–Dutch project Nusantara Beat. Gangbé Brass Band

Desde Benín, a orillas del golfo de Guinea, nos llega la música de esta banda de metales nacida a finales de los noventa: la Gangbé Brass Band. Este nuevo álbum evoca las múltiples influencias musicales de ida y vuelta entre África y América, si bien su título, “From Ouidah to another world” (‘Desde Ouidah a otro mundo’), nos recuerda una realidad mucho más triste y terrible, aludiendo al puerto africano desde donde zarpaban los barcos negreros con destino al otro lado del océano.

From Benin, on the shores of the Gulf of Guinea, comes the music of this brass band born in the late 1990s: Gangbé Brass Band. This new album evokes the multiple musical influences flowing back and forth between Africa and America, while its title, “From Ouidah to another world”, reminds us of a much sadder and more terrible reality, alluding to the African port from which slave ships set sail bound for the other side of the ocean.

Repasamos la LIMúR, la Lista Ibérica de Músicas de Raíz, con algunos de los discos seleccionados para el último trimestre del 2025, así como otras novedades ibéricas, con un importante componente flamenco, rumbero y fiestero, celebrando también los 600 años de presencia del pueblo gitano en lo que hoy es España. Hablamos también del Festival Flamenco de Nimes, en tierras ocitanas de Francia y terminamos clamando contra las violencias, desastres y genocidios en Palestina, Sudán, Congo y tantos lugares de nuestro planeta, deseando un feliz año con un delicioso clásico congoleño.

We review LIMúR, the Iberian Roots Music Chart, with some of the albums selected for the final quarter of 2025, along with other Iberian new releases, with a strong flamenco, rumba and festive component, also celebrating 600 years of the presence of the Roma people in what is now Spain. We also talk about the Festival Flamenco Nîmes, in Occitan lands of France, and we end by raising our voices against violence, disasters and genocides in Palestine, Sudan, Congo and so many places on our planet, wishing a happy new year with a delicious Congolese classic.
