Desde las tierras de Bretaña se nos acercan estos dos bregados músicos, el acordeonista Youen Bodros y el saxofonista Timothée Le Bour, reinterpretando danzas de aquellas tierras célticas con especial intensidad, emoción y buen gusto. Ellos nos acercan su disco “Daou ribl” (‘Dos riberas’), publicado por Paker Prod.

From the lands of Brittany, these two accomplished musicians come to us, accordionist Youen Bodros and saxophonist Timothée Le Bour, reinterpreting dances from those Celtic lands with special intensity, emotion and good taste. Celebramos los tres discos favoritos del mes de octubre en Mundofonías, con la música de raíces judeo-árabes del Yemen de El Khat, los finlandeses Sväng y los húngaros Söndörgő. Nos seguimos dejando llevar por evocaciones de lo no visto en forma de novedades musicales, que nos hacen viajar entre Oriente Próximo, Irán, Afganistán o Bali.

We celebrate the three favorite albums of October in Mundofonías, with the Judeo-Arabic roots music of Yemen by El Khat, the Finns Sväng and the Hungarians Söndörgő. We continue to be carried away by evocations of the unseen in the form of musical new releases, which make us travel through the Middle East, Iran, Afghanistan or Bali.

Recientemente han sido publicadas versiones y revisiones de lo más diverso de lo que ya es un clásico del repertorio de Paco de Lucía, «Zyryab», pieza dedicada a ese enigmático y seductor personaje, músico innovador e «influencer avant le mot» de la corte de Córdoba en los tiempos de Al-Ándalus. Escuchamos al acordeonista vasco Gorka Hermosa en compañía del txistulari Garikoitz Mendizabal y de dos músicos muy ligados a Paco: el bajista Carles Benavent y el percusionista Tino Di Geraldo. A este último nos lo encontramos de nuevo, unas tres décadas atrás, en la versión que firmaron, junto a él, Jorge Pardo al saxo, Chano Domínguez al piano y Javier Colina al contrabajo. Con el citado pianista gaditano nos volvemos a encontrar en una reciente versión de esta pieza, junto con el percusionista brasileño Rubem Dantas, otro clásico del sexteto de Paco de Lucía, y su paisano, el maestro de la mandolina Hamilton de Holanda. Exploramos otras sorprendentes y recientísimas versiones de esta pieza, como la del artista kurdo Ruşan Filiztek o la del maestro rumano del cimbalom Marius Preda. Diego Amador al piano y José María Bandera a la guitarra nos ofrecen su visión, publicada este mismo año, de la misma pieza, que terminamos escuchando, como no podía ser menos, en la versión original del propio Paco de Lucía.

Recently, many different versions and revisions of what is already a classic in Paco de Lucía‘s repertoire have been published, “Zyryab”, a piece dedicated to this enigmatic and seductive character, innovative musician and “influencer avant le mot” of the court of Córdoba in the times of Al-Andalus. We listen to the Basque accordionist Gorka Hermosa in the company of the txistulari Garikoitz Mendizabal and two musicians closely linked to Paco: the bassist Carles Benavent and the percussionist Tino Di Geraldo. We find the latter again, some three decades ago, in the version signed by Jorge Pardo on saxophone, Chano Domínguez on piano and Javier Colina on double bass. With the aforementioned pianist from Cádiz we meet again in a recent version of this piece, along with the Brazilian percussionist Rubem Dantas, another classic of Paco de Lucía‘s sextet, and his fellow countryman, the mandolin master Hamilton de Holanda. We explore other surprising and very recent versions of this piece, such as that of the Kurdish artist Ruşan Filiztek or that of the Romanian cimbalom master Marius Preda. Diego Amador on piano and José María Bandera on guitar offer us their vision, published this year, of the same piece, which we end up listening to, of course, in the original version by Paco de Lucía himself.

Wishamalii

Wishamalii es un trío formado en Finlandia que reúne artistas de orígenes palestino-jordanos, etíopes y finlandeses. Su pianista y teclista, Kari Ikonen, utiliza un ingenioso sistema de su invención para adaptar la afinación del piano a los «maqamat», los modos de la música árabe, llamado «maqiano». Escuchamos músicas de su disco de presentación, «Al bahr» («El mar»), editado por Nordic Notes.

Wishamalii is a trio formed in Finland that brings together artists of Palestinian-Jordanian, Ethiopian and Finnish origins. Their pianist and keyboard player, Kari Ikonen, uses an ingenious system of his invention to adapt the tuning of the piano to the maqamat, the modes of Arabic music, called “maqiano”. We listen to music from their debut album, “Al bahr” (“The Sea”), released by Nordic Notes.

El pasado 26 de septiembre se celebró una velada musical en torno al estilo del pasillo ecuatoriano, auspiciada por la embajada de Ecuador en España. El cantor Carlos Grijalva ofició de maestro de ceremonias, junto con otros artistas ecuatorianos. Con él conversamos acerca del pasillo y otros géneros de la música popular ecuatoriana, mientras escuchamos un fragmento de la música allí grabada y otro pasillo de su disco “Reflejos”.

On September 26, a musical evening was held around the Ecuadorian pasillo style, organized by the Ecuadorian embassy in Spain. The singer Carlos Grijalva acted as master of ceremonies, along with other Ecuadorian artists. We talked with him about pasillo and other genres of Ecuadorian popular music, while we listen to a fragment of the music recorded there and another pasillo from his album “Reflejos”.

Light for a confused world

El título del programa con el que iniciamos esta nueva temporada está inspirado en los de las propias músicas que lo conforman, todas ellas extraídas de discos recién publicados o que lo harán próximamente. Se trata de un viaje desde Oriente Próximo hasta el subcontinente indio, con algunas conexiones europeas y norteamericanas. Suena el dúo del pianista libanés Philippe El Hage y el percusionista palestino Youssef Hbeisch; el grupo Wishamalii, que aúna artistas palestino-jordanos, etíopes y finlandeses; El Khat, recreando sus raíces judeo-árabes del Yemen con tímbricas inesperadas; el tañedor palestino del laúd oriental ud Nizar Rohana; la maestra del violín carnático del sur de la India Jyotsna Srikanth, y más artistas que exploran esas raíces carnáticas en combinación con otras influencias, como la vocalista Varijashree Venugopal, en complicidad con el deslumbrante tañedor estadounidense de banjo Béla Fleck, o el violinista Arun Ramamurthy, con su trío. Terminamos con el «disco perdido» de Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, que recupera grabaciones inéditas realizadas en 1990 y que ahora ven la luz por primera vez.

The title of the program with which we begin this new season is inspired by the ones of the music played, all from recently published or soon-to-be-released albums. It is a journey from the Middle East to the Indian subcontinent, with some European and North American connections. We listen to  the duo of Lebanese pianist Philippe El Hage and Palestinian percussionist Youssef Hbeisch; the group Wishamalii, uniting Palestinian-Jordanian, Ethiopian, and Finnish artists; El Khat, recreating their Judeo-Arabic Yemeni roots with unexpected timbres; Palestinian ud player Nizar Rohana; Carnatic violin master Jyotsna Srikanth from South India, and more artists exploring Carnatic roots in combination with other influences, like vocalist Varijashree Venugopal, in collaboration with dazzling American banjo player Béla Fleck, or violinist Arun Ramamurthy with his trio. We finish with the «lost album» of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, featuring previously unreleased recordings from 1990, now seeing the light for the first time.

Maré

Disfrutamos con el disco homónimo del proyecto portugués Maré, dedicado a las gentes del mar, con su reinterpretación de canciones, tradicionales o de autor, de referencias marineras. Con la dirección musical de Sara Vidal, conocida en estas tierras por haber sido la cantante de Luar na Lubre, es una edición del colectivo cultural Sons Vadios.

We enjoy the self-titled album by the Portuguese project Maré, dedicated to the people of the sea, with their reinterpretation of traditional or original songs that reference the maritime world. Under the musical direction of Sara Vidal, known in these parts for having been the lead singer of Luar na Lubre, it is an edition by the cultural collective Sons Vadios.
