Hablamos de próximas convocatorias musicales en las que el equipo de Mundofonías estará presente, como Budapest Ritmo o las Jornadas Profesionales de la Música de Extremadura (MUM), en Mérida. Suenan algunos de los artistas que estarán allí presentes, llevando aires de Hungría, Francia, España, Siria e Irán. Otras novedades discográficas nos hacen viajar también por Galicia, Argentina o Uzbekistán, en un programa en el que no faltan ni las fantasías musicales, ni los conjuros sonoros en contra de las guerras.

We talk about upcoming music gatherings in which the Mundofonías team will be present, such as Budapest Ritmo or the Jornadas Profesionales de la Música de Extremadura (MUM) in Mérida. We listen to some of the artists who will be performing there, bringing sounds from Hungary, France, Spain, Syria and Iran. Other new releases also take us on a journey through Galicia, Argentina and Uzbekistan, in a programme where neither musical fantasies nor sonic spells against wars are missing.

Solo Cissokho

Solo Cissokho fue un gran músico senegalés emigrado a Noruega. Nos dejó ya hace unos años, pero ahora se publica el único disco en el que aparece él solo, sin más acompañamiento que su voz y su kora. Una grabación, hasta ahora inédita, en la que se revelan todas las sutilezas de su arte. El título no podía ser más apropiado: “Solo”.

Solo Cissokhowas a great Senegalese musician who emigrated to Norway. He passed away a few years ago, but now the only album in which he appears alone is being released, accompanied only by his voice and his kora. A recording, previously unreleased, in which all the subtleties of his art are revealed. The title could not be more appropriate: “Solo”.

European explorations

Diríase que las exploraciones musicales en busca de lo sorprendente tienen que encaminarse a lejanas tierras, pero recorriendo nuestro continente también nos topamos con abundantes sorpresas musicales, como las que descubrimos en esta edición, basada en discos de reciente hechura. Esta expedición nos llevará por Escocia, Bretaña, Dinamarca, Finlandia, Alemania, los Balcanes, Hungría, Italia y Albania.

It would seem that musical explorations in search of the surprising must head towards distant lands, but by travelling across our continent we also encounter abundant musical surprises, such as those we discover in this edition, based on recently released albums. This expedition will take us through Scotland, Brittany, Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Balkans, Hungary, Italy and Albania.

Descubriendo mundos
Discovering worlds

Repasamos discos de reciente aparición que nos revelan una infinidad de mundos sonoros, muchas veces desconocidos, viajando desde la música tradicional recogida en las propias comunidades a las aventuras más arriesgadas, con afiladas guitarras o electrónica. La música nos lleva por Etiopía, Nueva York, Inglaterra, Noruega, Italia, Portugal y por la sonoridad de las comunidades rurales de Serbia, de los gitanos de Eslovaquia, de los gagaúces de Moldavia, los pueblos miaos del sur de China o la emigración camboyana a los Estados Unidos.

We review recently released albums that reveal an infinity of sound worlds, often unknown, travelling from traditional music collected within the communities themselves to the most daring adventures, with sharp guitars or electronics. Music takes us through Ethiopia, New York, England, Norway, Italy, Portugal, and through the soundscape of the popular communities of Serbia, of the Roma of Slovakia, of the Gagauz of Moldova, the Miao peoples of southern China, or the Cambodian diaspora in the United States.

Hacemos rebosar esta edición de Mundofonías de novedades discográficas, con aires búlgaros, ucranianos, húngaros, klezmer, arábigos y persas, desde tierras también francesas, balcánicas, escandinavas, norteamericanas, neerlandesas y canadienses. En estos tiempos, es casi inevitable que, al poner música de determinados artistas y procedencias, tengamos que acordarnos de la terrible situación de guerras, tiranías, bombardeos y masacres que están sufriendo, por lo que estas músicas se convierten en elementos de lucha y resistencia contra todas esas desgracias, con la esperanza de un mundo mejor.

We fill this edition of Mundofonías to the brim with new releases, with Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Hungarian, klezmer, Arabic and Persian flavours, also from French, Balkan, Scandinavian, North American, Dutch and Canadian lands. In these times, it is almost inevitable that, when playing music from certain artists and origins, we are reminded of the terrible situation of wars, tyrannies, bombings and massacres that they are enduring, so this music becomes an element of fight and resistance against all these tragedies, with the hope of a better world.

Vamos en busca de músicas en los confines del sur y el sudeste asiático. Nos dejamos sorprender por las inusuales maravillas, recién confeccionadas, que encontramos viajando por la India, Indonesia e Indochina, así como con los trabajos de artistas de otros lugares del planeta que encuentran allí su inspiración. Hacemos escala en la India, Bali y Camboya, en un vuelo musical con tripulación también belgo-italiana y franco-siria.

We set out in search of music in the far reaches of southern and Southeast Asia. We let ourselves be surprised by the unusual, freshly crafted wonders we encounter while traveling through India, Indonesia, and Indochina, as well as by the work of artists from other parts of the world who find their inspiration there. We make stops in India, Bali, and Cambodia, on a musical journey with a crew that is also Belgian-Italian and Franco-Syrian.

Disfrutamos de discos recién publicados o que lo harán próximamente, que nos traen raíces africanas con sabores del Congo, Benín, Madagascar, Mali y Senegal, así como conexiones también francesas, noruegas, japonesas, norteamericanas y británicas. Escucharemos nuevas grabaciones; la reedición de joyas del pasado, hasta ahora inencontrables, así como recitales inéditos de admirados artistas que ya nos han dejado.

We enjoy albums recently released or soon to be released that bring us African roots with flavours from Congo, Benin, Madagascar, Mali and Senegal, with French, Norwegian, Japanese, North American and British connections. We’ll listen to new recordings, the reissue of previously impossible-to-find gems from the past, as well as previously unheard live recitals by admired artists who are no longer with us.

Damily

Después de su anterior disco, “Fihisa”, del que hablábamos por aquí hace justo un año, el guitarrista malgache Damily vuelve en un tono muy diferente: de la exaltación festiva de entonces al intimismo evocador de “Fanjiry”. Aquí se nos muestra a solas con su guitarra y lanzándose, por primera vez, a cantar sus composiciones.

After his previous album, “Fihisa”, which we talked about here exactly a year ago, the Malagasy guitarist Damily returns in a very different tone: from the festive exhilaration of that time to the evocative intimacy of “Fanjiry”. Here he appears alone with his guitar, and for the first time, he ventures into singing his own compositions.
