Seleccionamos un ramillete de nuevos discos recién llegado a nuestra redacción, que nos llevan por bellos sonidos, inesperados tratamientos y sones bailables. Viajamos primero por diversos parajes europeos, con sones húngaros con conexión griega, irlandeses, vascos, castellanos, flamencos, incluyendo un pasaje para Japón. Después, sones latinoamericanos nos llevan por Brasil, Norteamérica y Venezuela.

We select a bouquet of new albums freshly arrived in our editorial office, taking us through beautiful sounds, unexpected treatments and danceable rhythms. We first travel across various European landscapes with Hungarian sounds featuring a Greek connection, Irish, Basque, Castilian and flamenco sonorities, including a passage to Japan. Afterwards, Latin American rhythms guide us through Brazil, North America and Venezuela.

Ponemos sobre la mesa una buena colección de discos bien interesantes y recientitos que nos hacen viajar a través de diferentes expresiones, tratamientos y sensibilidades relacionadas con las raíces musicales de muy diversos lugares de Europa. Comenzamos en Francia, con músicas que nos llegan desde París, Lille, Auvernia o Bretaña, con conexión ecuatoriana incluida. Continuamos en Gran Bretaña, recorriendo Escocia, Gales e Inglaterra, para terminar con vibrante música llegada desde Hungría.

We lay out a fine collection of truly interesting and very fresh albums that take us traveling through different expressions, approaches and sensibilities connected to the musical roots of many diverse places in Europe. We begin in France, with music arriving from Paris, Lille, Auvergne and Brittany, including an Ecuadorian connection. We continue in Great Britain, moving through Scotland, Wales and England, and end with vibrant music coming from Hungary.

Como es habitual ya desde hace muchos años, el equipo de Mundofonías acudió a la cita anual del WOMEX, uno de los eventos más grandes relacionados con las músicas de raíz del planeta que cada año se celebra en una ciudad distinta. En este 2025 fue en Támpere, Finlandia, y de allí nos traemos impresiones sobre algunos conciertos memorables, que evocamos y que nos hacen viajar por Mali, Tanzania, Madagascar, Serbia, Taiwán o Mauritania, entre otros destinos. También las conversaciones que mantuvimos con Maxime Bobo, coimpulsor del proyecto franco-malgache Bobo & Behaja, y con los músicos taiwaneses de 3Peoplemusic. Escuchamos también a la ganadora del Premio al Artista, la mauritana Noura Mint Seymali, y comentamos también la renuncia al Premio a la Excelencia Profesional de los impulsores de los Syrian Cassettes Archives, escuchando algunas de las músicas recuperadas y recopiladas en esta iniciativa.

As has long been the case, the Mundofonías team attended the annual meeting of WOMEX, one of the largest events related to root musics on the planet that is held each year in a different city. In 2025 it took place in Tampere, Finland, and from there we bring impressions of some memorable concerts which we recall and which make us travel through Mali, Tanzania, Madagascar, Serbia, Taiwan and Mauritania among other destinations. We also share the conversations we had with Maxime Bobo, co-promoter of the Franco-Malagasy project Bobo & Behaja, and with the Taiwanese musicians of 3Peoplemusic. We listen to the winner of the Artist Award, the Mauritanian Noura Mint Seymali, and we also comment on the refusal of the Professional Excellence Award by the creators of the Syrian Cassettes Archives, listening to some of the music recovered and compiled in this initiative.

Los artistas que nos visitan nos hablan de castillos, torres y jardines llenos de músicas muy particulares. Enlazamos sones nórdicos, célticos, australianos, árabes, persas, indochinos, suizos, eritreos y de afrobeat, recordando también que, en caso de existir las razas, solo hay una: la raza humana.

The visiting artists tell us about castles, towers and gardens filled with very distinctive music. We connect Nordic, Celtic, Australian, Arabic, Persian, Indochinese, Swiss, Eritrean and afrobeat sounds, also recalling that if races existed there would only be one: the human race.

En esta ocasión precisamos que más ancha todavía es Eurasia, el mayor continente de la tierra, dividido en dos por razones ajenas a la geografía. In the previous season we titled one of our programs “Wide is Asia”. This time we specify that Eurasia is even wider, the largest continent on Earth, divided in two for reasons unrelated to geography. The Secret Trio

Es un secreto a voces que los componentes de The Secret Trio son considerados como unos de los músicos más relevantes, cada uno en su instrumento y en su especialidad: el armenio Ara Dinkjian, con el ud, laúd oriental; el normacedonio Ismail Lumanovski, virtuoso del clarinete, y el turco Tamer Pınarbaşı, tañedor de la cítara kanún. Los tres renuevan su amistad musical en este nuevo disco, “Old friends” (‘Viejos amigos’).

It is an open secret that the members of The Secret Trio are considered some of the most outstanding musicians, each in their instrument and specialty: the Armenian Ara Dinkjian, with the oud, an Oriental lute; the North Macedonian Ismail Lumanovski, a virtuoso of the clarinet, and the Turkish Tamer Pınarbaşı, a player of the kanun zither. The three renew their musical friendship in this new album, “Old Friends”.

Siempre con nosotros
Always with us

Homenajeamos a artistas que nos han dejado recientemente, pero cuya música pervivirá siempre con nosotros. Mientras tanta música intrascendental pugna por colarse en nuestros oídos, lo de verdad relevante emociona y perdura, como la música de estos artistas. Nos despedimos de Jan-Maria Carlotti, Djamchid Chemirani y Erik Marchand, recreándonos especialmente en la carrera de este último. Cerramos con novedades de aires balcánicos y nórdicos.

We pay tribute to artists who have recently left us but whose music will always remain with us. While so much inconsequential music struggles to force its way into our ears, what truly matters moves us and endures, like the music of these artists. We bid farewell to Jan-Maria Carlotti, Djamchid Chemirani and Erik Marchand, dwelling especially on the career of the latter. We close with new releases carrying Balkan and Nordic airs.

Cuerdas en el Atlántico
Strings in the Atlantic

Abrimos a los sones de la guitarra flamenca, para dedicar el resto del programa a la reciente edición del Cordas World Music Festival, celebrado en la isla de Pico, en las Azores, en el que tuvimos la oportunidad de disfrutar de grandes artistas tañendo sus instrumentos de cuerdas de Portugal, tanto de las islas como del continente, de Canarias, Brasil o Finlandia. Hablamos también con Terry Costa, director del festival, que este año festejaba su décimo aniversario.

We open to the sounds of the flamenco guitar, dedicating the rest of the program to the recent edition of the Cordas World Music Festival, held on the island of Pico in the Azores, where we had the opportunity to enjoy great artists playing their string instruments from Portugal, both from the islands and the mainland, as well as from the Canary Islands, Brazil and Finland. We also speak with Terry Costa, the festival’s director, as this year marked its tenth anniversary.
