Tributes, new releases and music for freedom

Comenzamos homenajeando a grandes artistas que se nos han ido recientemente, como el contrabajista inglés Danny Thompson, el cantaor andaluz Fosforito y el tañedor de guitarra portuguesa António Chainho. El resto del programa está dedicado a nuevos discos que nos llegan desde todos los rincones del mundo: las Azores, Australia, Santo Tomé y Príncipe, el Líbano, Francia y Argelia, conectando también músicas que vibraban hace décadas en la lucha contra el colonialismo en África, con otras que se levantan contra el horrible e injustificable genocidio de Gaza.

We begin by paying tribute to great artists who have recently passed away, such as the English double bassist Danny Thompson, the Andalusian flamenco singer Fosforito and the Portuguese guitar player António Chainho. The rest of the programme is devoted to new albums arriving from all corners of the world: the Azores, Australia, São Tomé and Príncipe, Lebanon, France and Algeria, also connecting music that was vibrating decades ago in the struggle against colonialism in Africa with other music that rise up against the horrific and unjustifiable genocide in Gaza.

Escuchamos la música de esta artista iraní radicada en Nueva York, cantante, compositora y tañedora de kamanché y violín: Mehrnam Rastegari. Junto con artistas de variopinta procedencia, instalados también en la Gran Manzana, nos lanza su interesante propuesta de raíces persas y alto voltaje rockero, plasmada en su disco “Dislocated pulse” (‘Pulso dislocado’).

We listen to the music of this Iranian artist based in New York, a singer, composer and player of the kamancheh and violin: Mehrnam Rastegari. Together with artists of varied backgrounds, also based in the Big Apple, she presents her compelling proposal rooted in Persian traditions and charged with high-voltage rock, captured on her album “Dislocated pulse”.

We discover rooted music that, from Serbia, offers us very diverse facets and approaches, ranging from the most traditional sound to the most uninhibited experimentation. We also explore and travel through other European musical territories that are more or less close, such as Croatia, Hungary and Russia, delving into recent and compelling recordings.

Su nuevo trabajo, “Il mito”, es ya el número veintiuno y celebra medio siglo consagrado a unas músicas que han paseado por todo el mundo: las de sus tierras sureñas, las de Apulia, y de su región, Salento.

We celebrate the golden anniversary of this pioneering Italian group that is still fully active: Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino. Their new release, “Il mito” is already their twenty-first album and marks half a century devoted to music they have carried around the world: the music of their southern lands, Apulia, and of their home region, Salento.

Viajamos hasta Bali para sumergirnos en una de las músicas más fascinantes del planeta: el gamelán. El tenaz y encomiable sello local Insitu Recordings nos muestra en sus grabaciones este arte brillando, como los instrumentos de metal empleados, en todo su esplendor. Se trata, en este caso, del último trabajo del Gamelan Pesel: “Pesta nada” (‘Fiesta de notas’).

We travel to Bali to immerse ourselves in one of the most fascinating musical traditions on the planet: gamelan. The tenacious and commendable local label Insitu Recordings showcases this art in its recordings, shining in all its splendour, like the metal instruments employed. In this case, it is the latest work by Gamelan Pesel, titled “Pesta nada” (‘Feast of notes’).
