We go over some of the albums selected in LIMúR, the Iberian Roots Music Chart for the first quarter of 2025, featuring musical proposals from the Valencian Country, the Basque Country, Portugal and Murcia, with Sephardic, Arabic, Balkan and jazz connections, among others. We send a special congratulations to Mara Aranda for her number 1. And we go on with more Iberian new releases and previews, among traditional, fado and flamenco airs.

Mara Aranda

La celebrada cantora valenciana Mara Aranda nos ofrece el cuarto álbum de una pentalogía dedicada a recoger y recrear las kantikas de las comunidades sefardíes. En las anteriores entregas se repasaban sones llegados de los actuales territorios de Marruecos, Turquía y Grecia, para desembocar ahora en este autopublicado “Sefarad en el corazón de Bulgaria”, que ya ha sido galardonado con el primer puesto de la Lista Ibérica de Músicas de Raíz (LIMúR).

The celebrated Valencian singer Mara Aranda offers us the fourth album in a pentalogy dedicated to collecting and reinterpreting the kantikas of Sephardic communities. The previous releases explored melodies from what are now the territories of Morocco, Turkey and Greece, leading now to the self-released “Sefarad en el corazón de Bulgaria”, which has already been awarded first place on the LIMúR, Iberian Roots Music Chart.

Jardines sonoros de Oriente
Sound gardens of the East

Siempre es una delicia pasear por las músicas que nos trasladan a Oriente. Esta edición de Mil mundos es una visita guiada a varios de esos jardines sonoros que, en forma de disco, han germinado últimamente, trayéndonos ecos del norte de África, Anatolia, Oriente Próximo, Persia, Afganistán y la India. Suenan, entre otros, los nuevos trabajos del tunecino Anouar Brahem, del libanés Ibrahim Maalouf, de los persas Rastak o del combinado persa-palestino-francés del Ensemble Chakâm.

It’s always a delight to wander through music that transports us to the East. This edition of “Mil Mundos” is a guided tour of several of those sonic gardens that have recently blossomed in album form, bringing us echoes from North Africa, Anatolia, the Middle East, Persia, Afghanistan and India. Among others, we hear new works from the Tunisian Anouar Brahem, the Lebanese Ibrahim Maalouf, the Persian group Rastak and the Persian-Palestinian-French Ensemble Chakâm.​

Desde Nueva Zelanda, o Aotearoa, por su nombre maorí, nos llega la música de Muriwai (‘Confluencia’), dúo en el que convergen las tradiciones célticas y maoríes que resuenan en las voces, el arpa celta y los taonga pūoro, instrumentos tradicionales de aquellas islas de nuestras antípodas.

From New Zealand, or Aotearoa in Māori, comes the music of “Muriwai” (“Confluence”), a duo where Celtic and Māori traditions converge, resonating through vocals, the Celtic harp and taonga pūoro, traditional instruments from those islands in our antipodes. ​

We navigate through albums being released these days that bring us echoes from all continents, such as Africa, with Ethiopian, Sudanese or Cape Verdean sounds; America, with Brazilian sonorities and North American connections; Asia, with sounds that link to Siberia, Taiwan, Tibet or India; Europe, with Bulgarian inspirations and French, Italian and Iberian ties; and also Australia.

Rastak

El reconocido grupo Rastak lleva desde finales del siglo pasado cultivando y difundiendo músicas de las diversas culturas, lenguas y territorios de Irán, con un estilo tan refinado como atractivo. Últimamente, la situación en su país, particularmente en lo que concierne a las mujeres, les ha empujado al exilio, desde donde siguen en plena y fecunda actividad, como demuestra este nuevo disco autoproducido, “Tales of Earth and Sun” (‘Cuentos de la Tierra y el Sol’).

The renowned group Rastak has been cultivating and spreading music from the diverse cultures, languages, and regions of Iran since the late 20th century, with a style as refined as it is appealing. Recently, the situation in their country, particularly regarding women, has forced them into exile. From there, they remain fully active and creatively prolific, as evidenced by their new self-produced album, “Tales of Earth and Sun”.

En este mes de abril del 2025, disfrutamos con inspiraciones musicales húngaras, cubano-mexicanas, persas, pakistaníes, malgaches, marroquíes, peruanas, malienses y franco-irano-palestinas. El número 1 es para el Trio Da Kali, desde Mali.

Rooted and exploratory sounds converge in this new and brilliant project that brings together artists from Africa and Europe, hailing from La Réunion, Burkina Faso and mainland France, which is released today in physical format through the Airfono label.

Hasta hace no muchas décadas era impensable que alguien pudiera escuchar en una vida entera música de todos los parajes que recorremos en tan solo una hora de Mundofonías. Bueno, en pleno siglo XXI mucha gente tampoco lo hace y la inmensa mayoría de los medios dan la espalda a esta maravillosa posibilidad que en este programa se hace real. Viajamos entre Brasil, Honduras, Argentina, Birmania, el Tíbet, Anatolia, los Países Bajos, Grecia y el norte de África, rindiendo tributo también al músico garifuna Aurelio Martínez, recientemente desaparecido, y a todas las víctimas del terremoto y la guerra de los pueblos de Birmania.

Until just a few decades ago, it was unthinkable that someone could hear music from all the places we explore in just one hour of Mundofonías in a single lifetime. Well, in the 21st century, many still don’t – and the vast majority of media outlets turn their backs on this marvellous possibility, which becomes real in this programme. We travel through Brazil, Honduras, Argentina, Burma, Tibet, Anatolia, the Netherlands, Greece, and North Africa, also paying tribute to the Garifuna musician Aurelio Martínez, recently departed, and to all the victims of the earthquake and war among the peoples of Burma.
