Exploramos diferentes orientes musicales reflejados en interesantes producciones discográficas de reciente aparición. Disfrutamos con las propuestas musicales de Les Arrivants, desde Canadá, y de Isabelle Courroy, desde Francia. La leyenda del violín de la India L. Shankar nos muestra su último trabajo y, desde Tuvá, Choduraa Tumat nos descubre un abanico de texturas vocales. Traemos también las voces invitadas del udista marroquí Driss El Maloumi y del músico español Javier Blanco, quien ha realizado los arreglos orquestales para el nuevo trabajo del trío del artista magrebí con el Watar Quintet, del que escuchamos varias piezas.

We explore different musical Orients reflected in interesting recently released recordings. We enjoy the musical offerings of Les Arrivants from Canada and Isabelle Courroy from France. The legendary Indian violinist L. Shankar presents his latest work, and from Tuva, Choduraa Tumat reveals a range of vocal textures. We also feature guest voices, including the Moroccan oud player Driss El Maloumi and the Spanish musician Javier Blanco, who has created the orchestral arrangements for the new work of the Maghrebi artist’s trio with the Watar Quintet, from which we listen to several pieces.

Jailaubai Asylhanov y Nūrbolat Janamanov son dos maestros de la dombra, instrumento de dos cuerdas propio de la tradición kazaja, aparentemente sencillo, pero muy versátil en manos de buenos tañedores como estos. A ellos dedica el prolífico e inquieto sello Antonovka Records sendas ediciones discográficas en formato digital.

Jailaubai Asylhanov and Nūrbolat Janamanov are two masters of the dombra, a two-stringed instrument intrinsic to Kazakh tradition. It may seem simple, but it’s highly versatile in the hands of skilled players like these. The prolific and dynamic label Antonovka Records has dedicated individual digital releases to each of them.

Asia and Africa, yesterday and today

Viajamos a través de novedades y adelantos musicales que nos llevan por Asia, con evocaciones sonoras mongolas, indias y persas, y por África, con músicas de hoy que nos llegan desde Zimbabue y grabaciones históricas desde Tanzania con mucho sabor congoleño.

We travel through new releases and musical previews that take us across Asia, with Mongolian, Indian, and Persian sound evocations, and through Africa, with today’s music from Zimbabwe and historical recordings from Tanzania with a strong Congolese flavor.

Fira Mediterrània de Manresa & Premio Andrea Parodi

Hacemos la crónica de dos importantes eventos mediterráneos de los que Mundofonías es medio colaborador: la Fira Mediterrània de Manresa y el Premio Andrea Parodi, que se celebran en Cataluña y en Cerdeña, respectivamente. Suenan músicas ibéricas, con aires flamencos, castellanos y catalanes, también sonoridades argentinas y sones de diversas regiones de África.

We chronicle two important Mediterranean events in which Mundofonías is a media partner: the Fira Mediterrània de Manresa and the Premio Andrea Parodi, held in Catalonia and Sardinia, respectively. You’ll hear Iberian music, with flamenco, Castilian, and Catalan airs, as well as Argentine and Mexican sounds and tunes from various regions of Africa.

Ballaké Sissoko & Derek Gripper

Asistimos al inspirado diálogo musical de dos artistas africanos de procedencia muy distinta y distante. Por un lado, el maliense Ballaké Sissoko, uno de los más considerados intérpretes de kora de la actualidad y, por otro, el sudafricano Derek Gripper, guitarrista que ha sabido llevar a su instrumento las inflexiones y sutilezas de la música del África Occidental. Juntos nos presentan su disco publicado por Matsuli Music.

We witness the inspired musical dialogue of two African artists from very different and distant origins. On one hand, Malian Ballaké Sissoko, one of the most acclaimed kora players of today, and on the other, South African Derek Gripper, a guitarist who has brought the inflections and subtleties of West African music to his instrument. Together, they present their album released by Matsuli Music.

From the Himalayas to the Tropics

Comenzamos nuestro viaje musical, repleto de novedades musicales, en el escarpado país de Bután, en pleno corazón del Himalaya, siguiendo con más conexiones asiáticas que enlazan Pakistán con Escocia y China con los Apalaches, por un lado, y con Cuba, por otro. Seguimos por el Caribe, con más músicas de Colombia y Cuba, estableciendo también un enlace con la isla de La Reunión, en el océano Índico, para terminar en África con músicas de Tanzania, Mali y São Tomé e Príncipe.

We begin our musical journey, filled with new releases, in the rugged country of Bhutan, nestled in the heart of the Himalayas. From there, we continue with more Asian connections linking Pakistan with Scotland and China with both the Appalachians and Cuba. We then head to the Caribbean with more music from Colombia and Cuba, establishing a link with the island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean, before concluding in Africa with music from Tanzania, Mali, and São Tomé and Príncipe.

Radicado en Francia, pero con inspiraciones balcánicas, el Quintet Bumbac nos acerca composiciones propias llenas de brillantez, delicadeza y matices. David Brossier, a la cabeza del grupo blandiendo su violín d’amore, es el responsable de las mismas. Disfrutamos con músicas de su disco “Héritages”, ‘Legados’, editado por el inquieto Collectif Çok Malko.

Based in France but inspired by Balkan influences, Quintet Bumbac brings us original compositions full of brilliance, delicacy, and nuance. David Brossier, leading the group with his violino d’amore, is responsible for these creations. We enjoy music from their album «Héritages» (Legacies), released by the ever-dynamic Collectif Çok Malko.

El cantante y tañedor de diferentes instrumentos de cuerda Ruşan Filiztek nos propone un viaje desde Mesopotamia a Andalucía, como reza el subtítulo de este su nuevo trabajo, “Exils”, editado por Accords Croisés, en el que se dan cita inspiraciones kurdas y flamencas.

The singer and player of various string instruments Ruşan Filiztek, invites us on a journey from Mesopotamia to Andalusia, as stated in the subtitle of his new work, “Exils”, released by Accords Croisés, where Kurdish and flamenco inspirations converge.

We begin with sound experimentations featuring Indian, Japanese, Chinese, French, and North American connections. We remember the wonderful songs of the Tatar artist based in Australia, Zulya Kamalova, who recently passed away, and we end with the songs of Uralic peoples.
