Comenzamos con los tres discos favoritos de Mundofonías de noviembre del 2023, con los bretones O’Tridal, los húngaros Times New Román y los bolivianos Los Ruphay. Continuamos con más músicas mágicas que nos llevan por Sudamérica, Etiopía, La Reunión, la India, Nueva Orleans y otros paraísos musicales.

We start with the three Mundofonías’ favorite albums of November 2023, with the Bretons O’Tridal, the Hungarians Times New Román and the Bolivians Los Ruphay. We continue with more magical music that takes us through South America, Ethiopia, Réunion, India, New Orleans and other musical paradises.

Repasamos algunos discos de reciente producción que nos traen ecos de las islas Británicas, o, como prefieren decir los irlandeses, del archipiélago Atlántico. Suena el acordeón diatónico del inglés Archie Churchill-Moss, el grupo irlandés Pontún o los escoceses Rura y Dallahan. Disfrutamos después con el estupendo nuevo trabajo de la violinista, cantante y compositora Eliza Carthy con su trío; del afortunado encuentro de la violinista irlandesa Aoife Ní Bhriain con la arpista galesa Catrin Finch 📸, o de la evocación musical de Pól Brennan acerca de los acontecimientos históricos que desembocaron en la independencia de Irlanda. Recordamos también algunas maravillas vocales de la anglobritánica Sheila Chandra, ahora reeditadas, y terminamos en Irlanda del Norte con Réalta.

We review some recently produced albums that bring us echoes of the British Isles, or, as the Irish prefer to say, of the Atlantic Archipelago. We listen to the diatonic accordion of the Englishman Archie Churchill-Moss, the Irish group Pontún or the Scots Rura and Dallahan. We then enjoy the wonderful new work of the violinist, singer and composer Eliza Carthy with her trio; the fortunate meeting of the Irish violinist Aoife Ní Bhriain with the Welsh harpist Catrin Finch 📸, or the musical evocation of Pól Brennan about the historical events that led to the independence of Ireland. We also remember some vocal wonders of the Anglo-British Sheila Chandra, now reissued, and we finish in Northern Ireland with Réalta.

Our journey from Persia to Scandinavia is not a straight line. We pass through Kurdish and Maghrebi lands and music, through a London and a Seattle with global resonances, to finally delight ourselves with a bunch of Nordic musical new releases. We also talk in our #Mundofonews about global music events taking place around these days, such as the Festîval Kurdistan, in Hamburg; Visa for Music, in Rabat, or Mundial Montréal.

Transglobal World Music Chart

Repaso libre a la Transglobal World Music Chart de este mes, confeccionada a través de la votación de un panel de divulgadores de las músicas del mundo de todos los continentes, del que los hacedores de Mundofonías somos cocreadores y coimpulsores. Este mes de noviembre del 2023, dibujamos trazos musicales que nos llevan por África Occidental, el Mediterráneo, los Balcanes, Persia, Asia Cental y los Andes. El número uno va para la artista boliviana Luzmila Carpio.

A loose review of this month’s Transglobal World Music Chart, determined by a panel of world music specialists from all the continents, of which the Mundofonías‘ presenters are co-creators and co-promoters. This November 2023, we draw musical traces that take us through West Africa, the Mediterranean, the Balkans, Persia, Central Asia and the Andes. Number one goes to Bolivian artist Luzmila Carpio.

Buscamos los confines de Asia para disfrutar recientes hallazgos musicales que dibujan encuentros y experimentos más que interesantes. La conexión india está presente en un buen tramo del programa, con los dos violines de Trina Basu y Arun Ramamurthy; el encuentro de Alam Khan, al sarod, Arjun K. Verma, al sitar y el cuarteto de cuerdas Del Sol; el proyecto indo-jazzístico Rags and ragas de la pianista Charu Suri, o la conexión de los universos del gamelán indonesio y los ragas de la India en la música de la indonesia Sinta Wullur. Continuamos con el vietnamita Tri Nguyen y sus dúos en solitario al piano y la cítara đàn tranh; el encuentro de la polaca Maria Pomianowska, a la viola suka, y la china Mingjie Yu, con la cítara zheng; más experimentos sobre la base de los instrumentos y las tradiciones chinas por el grupo taiwanés 三個人3peoplemusic 📸, y, finalmente, el eco del canto difónico tuvano, el khöömei, en la voz de Batsükh Dorj.

We seek the edges of Asia to enjoy recent musical discoveries that draw more than interesting encounters and experiments. The Indian connection is present in a good part of the program, with the two violins of Trina Basu and Arun Ramamurthy; the meeting of Alam Khan, on sarod, Arjun K. Verma, on sitar and the Del Sol String Quartet; the Indo-jazz project Rags and ragas of the pianist Charu Suri, or the connection of the universes of Indonesian gamelan and Indian ragas in the music of the Indonesian Sinta Wullur. We continue with the Vietnamese Tri Nguyen and his solo duets on piano and đàn tranh zither; the meeting of the Polish Maria Pomianowska, on suka viola, and the Chinese Mingjie Yu, on zheng zither; more experiments on the basis of Chinese instruments and traditions by the Taiwanese group 三個人3peoplemusic 📸, and, finally, the echo of the Tuvan diphonic chant, the khöömei, in the voice of Batsükh Dorj.

Viajamos por América Latina en pos de interesantes novedades musicales. Disfrutaremos del diálogo de cuerdas brasileño-canario de la guitarra de Yamandu Costa y el timple de Domingo el Colorao, así como del encuentro peruano-persa de charango y kamanché del Duo Perse-Inca. Celmaca nos trae aires de petenera mexicana; Cantares del Pacífico, los ritmos de esa región colombiana, y Wesli 📸, las tradiciones musicales de Haití. Encontramos inspiraciones brasileñas en la música de As Madalenas, Ted Falcon e Irma Ferreira, así como en el disco póstumo de Wilson das Neves, en el que se ha volcado un buen número de importantes nombres de la escena musical brasileña. De esa grabación extraemos un samba interpretado por el propio Wilson y otra pieza a cargo de Cláudio Jorge y Pretinho da Serra.

We travel through Latin America in search of interesting musical new releases. We will enjoy the Brazilian-Canarian string dialogue of Yamandu Costa’s guitar and Domingo el Colorao‘s timple, as well as the Peruvian-Persian encounter of charango and kamancheh by the Perse-Inca Duo. Celmaca brings us Mexican petenera airs; Cantares del Pacífico, the rhythms of that Colombian region, and Wesli 📸, the musical traditions of Haiti. We find Brazilian inspirations in the music of As Madalenas, Ted Falcon and Irma Ferreira, as well as in the posthumous album by Wilson das Neves, in which a number of important names of the Brazilian music scene have been involved. From that recording we select a samba performed by Wilson himself and another piece by Cláudio Jorge and Pretinho da Serra.

Hace muy pocos días, el sello Smithsonian Folkways Recordings publicaba el disco de los Aga Khan Master Musicians, un colectivo de maestros musicales procedentes de un amplísimo arco que se extiende a lo largo de la geografía asiática, desde Oriente Próximo hasta China, llegando también al norte de África, con importante presencia de artistas de Asia Central. Disfrutamos con las músicas contenidas en este disco y también con varios ejemplos del igualmente reciente y también fascinante álbum colectivo «Lost in Tajikistan«, a cargo de Mizrob, Samandar y Samo. Descubrimos el nuevo trabajo del veterano y venerado grupo paniraní Rastak, recientemente exiliado a Estambul, así como de la colaboración de uno de sus antiguos miembros, Kaveh Sarvarian, con el sirio Hames Bitar, ambos instalados en Madrid. A few days ago, the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings label released the album by the Aga Khan Master Musicians, a collective of master musicians from a very wide geographic arc that extends throughout Asia, from the Middle East to China, reaching also North Africa, with an important presence of artists from Central Asia. We enjoy the music contained in this album and also several examples of the equally recent and fascinating collective album «Lost in Tajikistan«, by Mizrob, Samandar and Samo. We discover the new work of the veteran and acclaimed pan-Iranian group Rastak, recently exiled to Istanbul, as well as the collaboration of one of its former members, Kaveh Sarvarian, with the Syrian Hames Bitar, both based in Madrid. Novedades y evocaciones flamencas, andinas, colombianas, afrohispanas y afrofinlandesas se alternan con muchas felicitaciones cumpleañeras: los 50 años de los bolivianos Los Ruphay, el décimo aniversario del sello Slow Walk Music, los casi 90 años de Discos Fuentes, los 60 que celebran, también desde Colombia, Los Corraleros de Magajual, la feliz década que The Blassics cumplen en el sello Odd Funk. Contamos con las voces invitadas de Javier Zarco (Slow Walk Music) y de José Miguel Gómez Martínez (Discos Fuentes), quienes nos hablan de la historia y filosofía de sus respectivos sellos.

Flamenco, Andean, Colombian, Afro-Hispanic and Afro-Finnish new releases and evocations alternate with many birthday celebrations: the 50th anniversary of the Bolivians Los Ruphay, the tenth anniversary of the Slow Walk Music label, almost 90 years of Discos Fuentes, the 60th anniversary celebrated, also from Colombia, by Los Corraleros de Magajual, the happy decade that The Blassics are celebrating on the Odd Funk label.
