The planet vibrates with new music arriving from its four corners. New releases and previews bring us klezmer, Arabic, Ethiopian, Georgian, Persian, Balinese and Punjabi sounds, with connections stretching from Lyon to Brooklyn, via Switzerland and Catalonia.

Ukandanz

Un cuarteto de Lyon y un cantante de Adís Abeba: esa es la conexión franco-etíope que define a este grupo, Ukandanz, que conjuga elementos musicales etíopes y jazzísticos con actitud punk, meticulosidad progresiva y ramalazos heavies (versión de Black Sabbath incluida). En su nuevo trabajo “Evil plan” (‘Plan diabólico’) desarrollan sus más laberínticas intrigas musicales.

A quartet from Lyon and a singer from Addis Ababa: that is the French-Ethiopian connection that defines this band, Ukandanz, which blends Ethiopian and jazz musical elements with a punk attitude, progressive meticulousness, and heavy metal outbursts (including a Black Sabbath cover). In their new album “Evil plan”, they develop their most labyrinthine musical intrigues.

¡Tsapiky!

En estos días se publican dos discos fundamentales sobre el irresistible ritmo del tsapiky, originario del sudoeste de Madagascar, registrados allí in situ: el nuevo trabajo del guitarrista Damily y su Toliaria Tsapiky Band, con grabaciones realizadas durante la fihisa, la celebración fúnebre por la muerte de su madre, y el recopilatorio «Tsapiky! Modern music from southwest Madagascar«, que verá la luz a primeros de mayo. Echamos mano también de otros dos recopilatorios esenciales anteriores, como son «Tsapiky, panorama d’une jeune musique de Tuléar» y «Tulear never sleeps: Tsapiky guitars from South West Madagascar«, así como de la música de los franceses Electric Vocuhila, imbuidos de esta sonoridad. Son grabaciones que nos permitirán profundizar en este indómito estilo que se adapta a las más variadas instrumentaciones: guitarras eléctricas y acústicas, acordeones, flautas, fanfarrias…

These days, two essential albums are being released featuring the irresistible rhythm of tsapiky, originally from the southwest of Madagascar, recorded on site: the new work by guitarist Damily and his Toliara Tsapiky Band, with recordings made during the fihisa, the funeral celebration for his mother’s passing, and the compilation “Tsapiky! Modern Music from Southwest Madagascar”, which will be released in early May. We also revisit two previous essential compilations: “Tsapiky, Panorama d’une Jeune Musique de Tuléar” and “Tulear Never Sleeps: Tsapiky Guitars from South West Madagascar”, as well as music by the French group Electric Vocuhila, steeped in this sound. These recordings allow us to delve deeper into this indomitable style that adapts to the most varied instrumentations: electric and acoustic guitars, accordions, flutes, brass bands…

Desde el conocimiento y el amor por sus raíces, el grupo Tatros, Tatros Együttes, sale en busca de las sonoridades más ancestrales de la cultura húngara que se han conservado en las comunidades csango de las actuales Rumanía y Moldavía. El resultado nos lo brindan en este espléndido disco autopublicado: “Pillanat” (‘Momento’).

From the knowledge and love for their roots, the group Tatros, Tatros Együttes, seeks out the most ancestral sounds of Hungarian culture that have been preserved within the Csango communities of present-day Romania and Moldova. The result is offered to us in this splendid self-released album: “Pillanat” (‘Moment’).

La celebrada cantora valenciana Mara Aranda nos ofrece el cuarto álbum de una pentalogía dedicada a recoger y recrear las kantikas de las comunidades sefardíes. En las anteriores entregas se repasaban sones llegados de los actuales territorios de Marruecos, Turquía y Grecia, para desembocar ahora en este autopublicado “Sefarad en el corazón de Bulgaria”, que ya ha sido galardonado con el primer puesto de la Lista Ibérica de Músicas de Raíz (LIMúR).

The celebrated Valencian singer Mara Aranda offers us the fourth album in a pentalogy dedicated to collecting and reinterpreting the kantikas of Sephardic communities. The previous releases explored melodies from what are now the territories of Morocco, Turkey and Greece, leading now to the self-released “Sefarad en el corazón de Bulgaria”, which has already been awarded first place on the LIMúR, Iberian Roots Music Chart.

Sound gardens of the East

Siempre es una delicia pasear por las músicas que nos trasladan a Oriente. Esta edición de Mil mundos es una visita guiada a varios de esos jardines sonoros que, en forma de disco, han germinado últimamente, trayéndonos ecos del norte de África, Anatolia, Oriente Próximo, Persia, Afganistán y la India. Suenan, entre otros, los nuevos trabajos del tunecino Anouar Brahem, del libanés Ibrahim Maalouf, de los persas Rastak o del combinado persa-palestino-francés del Ensemble Chakâm.

It’s always a delight to wander through music that transports us to the East. This edition of “Mil Mundos” is a guided tour of several of those sonic gardens that have recently blossomed in album form, bringing us echoes from North Africa, Anatolia, the Middle East, Persia, Afghanistan and India. Among others, we hear new works from the Tunisian Anouar Brahem, the Lebanese Ibrahim Maalouf, the Persian group Rastak and the Persian-Palestinian-French Ensemble Chakâm.​

Desde Nueva Zelanda, o Aotearoa, por su nombre maorí, nos llega la música de Muriwai (‘Confluencia’), dúo en el que convergen las tradiciones célticas y maoríes que resuenan en las voces, el arpa celta y los taonga pūoro, instrumentos tradicionales de aquellas islas de nuestras antípodas.

From New Zealand, or Aotearoa in Māori, comes the music of “Muriwai” (“Confluence”), a duo where Celtic and Māori traditions converge, resonating through vocals, the Celtic harp and taonga pūoro, traditional instruments from those islands in our antipodes. ​

Rastak

El reconocido grupo Rastak lleva desde finales del siglo pasado cultivando y difundiendo músicas de las diversas culturas, lenguas y territorios de Irán, con un estilo tan refinado como atractivo. Últimamente, la situación en su país, particularmente en lo que concierne a las mujeres, les ha empujado al exilio, desde donde siguen en plena y fecunda actividad, como demuestra este nuevo disco autoproducido, “Tales of Earth and Sun” (‘Cuentos de la Tierra y el Sol’).

The renowned group Rastak has been cultivating and spreading music from the diverse cultures, languages, and regions of Iran since the late 20th century, with a style as refined as it is appealing. Recently, the situation in their country, particularly regarding women, has forced them into exile. From there, they remain fully active and creatively prolific, as evidenced by their new self-produced album, “Tales of Earth and Sun”.
